Battle.net 2.0 to be Communityrific

Posted 10th Sep 2008 11:32 AM by Leord

Crispy Gamer have had a chat with Frank Pearce and Bob Colayco (probably from GZ Leipzig) about StarCraft II development, and it’s a quite long and nice interview. This is a list of all the key points:

  • StarCraft 2 is done when it’s done (fancier words)
  • Some minor “tutorials” for making 4 Marines in 5 minutes will be included
  • Achievements - vague answer (previously confirmed)
  • No console port for SC2 planned
  • DirectX 10 support, not looked at DX11
  • Koreans seems to dig SC2 alpha
  • Battle.net 2.0 will be “communityish” like Xbox Live
  • Voice Chat vague answer (previously confirmed)
  • If SC2 would ever be ported to consoles, hardware would not be an issue
  • SC: Ghost is hold a slight disappointment, but life goes on

While lots of it is very old news, the most interesting thing is of course that there will be built-in tutorials of some sort in the game for player skills. Since Colayco and Pearce discusses this feature separate from Single Player, we must assume it’s a separate feature from the Single Player experience. Another hot point is confirmation of DX10, through some deft words from Crispy (this has not actually been confirmed before, but we do have more info on the system specs of StarCraft 2, and Kalos is almost ready to drop a new article related to DX10 as well) as well as that Battle.net 2.0. A brief note that no official plans have been made about the beta was also made, which could be of some interest.

Crispy Gamer: So what are you most excited for, and what makes you most nervous about bringing back such a highly-esteemed franchise?

Pearce: The basic RTS experience isn’t something that’s unfamiliar to us—right? We’re not worried about that. Some of the ambitious goals that we have in terms of the online experience and Battle.Net—bringing that to the next level, and contemplating the things that are going on in social networks and other online gaming services like Xbox Live—I think that’s where we’re going to have some of the biggest challenges.

By the way, VG247 has just caught up on the old news that Blizzard will be considering what to do next when they are done, and that WarCraft IV is a possible option. The fact that this also includes WoW 2, StarCraft III, StarCraft Online, StarCraft: Ghost, Diablo IV, Diablo Online and that Blizzard haven’t even hinted on the next project they completely ignore.
