Blizzard Confirms Unannounced 4th Project

Posted 2nd Jul 2008 01:30 AM by Freelancer

Despite the fact that Blizzard is now working on 3 projects: Diablo 3, Starcraft 2 and World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, Blizzard have now confirmed that they are working on a 4th project.

Rob Pardo has confirmed that all the recent job listings for an “unannounced next-gen MMO” where/are not related to Diablo 3 or World of Warcraft. Direct result from this statement is that apparently this project is “a next Gen MMO”, whatever that means.

A few months ago you offered a job on the official Blizzard webpage, Considering a next gen MMO… A community manager added that its about a game that hasn’t been announced yet. Is there any new information on that or is Diablo the mentioned next gen MMO?

Rob Pardo: No, its obviously not, since it is not an MMO! We have another development team, that is…

So there is still one project?

Rob Pardo: Yea, there is still one “unknown” project…

If we combine this quote with another statement made by Blizzards Paul Sams, chief operating officer at Blizzard Entertainment:

Blizzard has very strong IP, but it also seems like all of it was created in the last century.

PS: First of all, that’s true that we’ve not introduced any new franchises this century. I think what it really comes down to is, we ask the teams what they want to make next.

I think the folks at our company are concerned, if they’re going to do a new franchise, that it be worthy - and that it be something that is equivalent or better than what we’ve done before, because they don’t want to do a franchise that’s not.

These are three of the best-selling franchises of all time, and very well-loved. So you’ve got a pretty high bar of trying to figure out what those franchises might be.

What I will say, though, is that the idea of a new franchise is very intriguing to employees of the company. Are we ever going to release a new one? I would absolutely say we will at some point. I just don’t know when that day will be quite yet.

So there you have it: Blizzard have another gem in the works and we can restart the speculation all over again. What could it be?

I think some 10 million WoW players would riot. As we all know it’s not a Warcraft game unless city’s get sacked. I think shifting up the world when they are about to release another expansion might make people a little angry.

Can’t you guys see it? It’s perfectly clear - it’s a new MMO that may have nothing to do with Star-, War-, or Diablocraft. Since Blizzard isn’t very good with coming up with new franchises lately, there is only one option left:

World of The Lost Vikings!

[QUOTE=Klear;4327]World of The Lost Vikings!

Woot!  I knew it!!!  wink

Seriously though…  I would kinda like a Diablo MMO…  SC MMO… eh…  I could stand it…  Another Warcraft game, I’d go to Blizz headquarters itself and smack them up a bit raspberry

I think it’s high time they resurrected the Lost Vikings franchise, I’m just not sure a MMO would be the way to go about it. smile

The only way I see that happening is tactical RPG, Freedom Force style. Platformer has gone out of style decade ago.

Platformers haven’t so much gone out of style; It’s just a very tired genera with little or no innovation in about a decade. Some people think Super Mario Galaxy had broken out of the stagnation. Others think that Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts will be the title to change it. I’m not sure about that Rare has yet to make a great game since joining Microsoft.

I can handle a Lost Vikings in the form of Mario Galaxy. smile

The step into 3D could make it difficult for one player to control all three characters, for example Olaf’s shield defense might hard to align unlike in a 2D environment, but the developers are clever guys, I’m sure they’ll work it all out if given the chance.

However this is about an unannounced MMO…

Yea… right.

Statistics say that it should be Galaxy of Starcraft, or something like that. There have been 4 Warcraft games and 3 datadiscs, 2 and a half Diablo games with a datadisk and only one and a half Starcraft games + Brood War. We need more sci-fi!

Edit:
BTW, not counting what’s currently under development (SCII), there have been 2 The Lost Vikings games and only one Starcraft with a datadisk!

If I remember correctly its actually:
(release/in development)
Warcraft (7/1):
- Warcraft I
- Warcraft 2 + exp
- Warcraft 3 + exp
- World of Warcraft + exp

Starcraft (2/1):
- Starcraft + exp

Diablo (4/1)
- Diablo + exp
- Diablo 2 + exp

So I think you can look at the whole thing in a number of different ways. Its clear that its an MMO, and its not likely to be a Warcraft one. So that leaves Starcraft, Diablo or a new franchise. There seem to be sources that suggest a new franchise and there is the Ghost project that still “On hold” and not officially cancelled. They probably want to differentiate Diablo from Wow (like they did with Warcraft III and Starcraft) so its not likely it will be turned into an MMO anytime soon.

So I think based on that that its a Starcraft or New Franchise based MMO.
