Despite the fact that Blizzard is now working on 3 projects: Diablo 3, Starcraft 2 and World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, Blizzard have now confirmed that they are working on a 4th project.
Rob Pardo has confirmed that all the recent job listings for an “unannounced next-gen MMO” where/are not related to Diablo 3 or World of Warcraft. Direct result from this statement is that apparently this project is “a next Gen MMO”, whatever that means.

| A few months ago you offered a job on the official Blizzard webpage, Considering a next gen MMO… A community manager added that its about a game that hasn’t been announced yet. Is there any new information on that or is Diablo the mentioned next gen MMO?
Rob Pardo: No, its obviously not, since it is not an MMO! We have another development team, that is… So there is still one project? Rob Pardo: Yea, there is still one “unknown” project… |

If we combine this quote with another statement made by Blizzards Paul Sams, chief operating officer at Blizzard Entertainment:

| Blizzard has very strong IP, but it also seems like all of it was created in the last century.
PS: First of all, that’s true that we’ve not introduced any new franchises this century. I think what it really comes down to is, we ask the teams what they want to make next. I think the folks at our company are concerned, if they’re going to do a new franchise, that it be worthy - and that it be something that is equivalent or better than what we’ve done before, because they don’t want to do a franchise that’s not. These are three of the best-selling franchises of all time, and very well-loved. So you’ve got a pretty high bar of trying to figure out what those franchises might be. What I will say, though, is that the idea of a new franchise is very intriguing to employees of the company. Are we ever going to release a new one? I would absolutely say we will at some point. I just don’t know when that day will be quite yet. |

So there you have it: Blizzard have another gem in the works and we can restart the speculation all over again. What could it be?
I think the concept of a new franchise is hard to wrap our head around considering the last new franchise was Starcraft a little over 10 years ago. However Blizzard has got to be getting the impression that they need something new. We all know that Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3, from an optimistic standpoint, are at least a year or two away. I don’t think that Blizzard is going to turn right around once it’s RTS team is done with the Starcraft expansion and get to work on Starcraft 3. I also think another Warcraft, that is a progression of the story line, is unlikely; partially because of WoW also because I’m not entirely sure how you create an adversary that tops the Demonic Legions of the twisted neither hell bent on destroying the world. The question is where do you go and what realties are left?
Fantasy is off because Warcraft has that base covered, Gothic fantasy is covered by Diablo, and Science Fiction is covered by Starcraft. From there I guess the question becomes what is left? I myself can only suggest either a Mythic or Realistic world otherwise I’m at a loss.
I hope it’s a new franchise, though it appears that it will be an MMO, so I’ll be avoiding it at any rate
I don’t know why, but it doesn’t seem to me the best way to introduce a new franchise by a MMOPRG.
I never really thought about that to be honest. I guess starting a new franchise as a MMO wouldn’t appeal to everyone.
Some players, as RussellMartin55 mentioned, might be more inclined to buy the new game if it was in a more familiar world.

Post-apocalyptic perhaps?
Post-Apocalyptic sounds really good. However I think it would have to be a RTS otherwise Bethesda and Fallout fans would have a ****-fit.
Hehe, could be, but if you make it RTS, wouldn’t Warhammer nerds finally get such a big brainfart their heads will explode ^^
Well, that franchise isn’t quite post-apocalyptic, but close enough. Would be cool if they revived the old “Mutant” IP from Aventyrsspel. The first true post-apocalyptic RPG ![]()
No no, I am still on about the StarCraft MMO. Wonder what type of name they could have to get a cool acronym like “WoW”. It’s a very good one.
[QUOTE=Bruce BeefcakeII;4265]Haha! Betrayer i am not! I’m not really a fan of mmo’s anyways…*starts up WoW*
However it would be interesting to see SC as an mmo but I’d rather dare not wish for it. ![]()
And no on your 3rd sentence. I didn’t move and its not in britain haha. I live in Kent, WA(AMERICA!!!) that is until september. That’s when i “move” to Seattle, WA(AMERICA!!!) and also when i start college. =)
DisAPPointED! =(

My thoughts exactly, and its a good point about Diablo. It’s always made a point of separating itself from the other two major franchises in terms of gameplay, so there’s probably a good chance it won’t make the leap to a MMO like WoW did.
In saying that, I seem to remember some Warcraft III early alpha trying to be more like Diablo…
I think it would be very weird to see Blizzard get up on stage and announce a game for a new franchise that no-ones ever heard of.
