Blizzard Fans Enraged over Kerrigan & Raynor Change

Posted 11th Mar 2009 12:19 PM by Leord

Thousands of Blizzard fans interested in the development of StarCraft 2 are up in arms over the developer's decision to change the voice actors of their two favourite characters from the original game. Even since it was first mentioned that the original actors might not return (at least not Robert Clotworthy, the voice of Jim Raynor), both critical and indifferent voices were raised by fans the StarCraft community, and the issue escalated slightly with the announcement that Blizzard started auditions for the voices of Jim Raynor and Sarah Kerrigan.

These auditions came as a bit of a surprise for Glynnis Talken, the voice of Sarah Kerigan, who had already been confirmed to be involved with further voice acting, and can actually be heard in the sneak peek cinematics recorded for StarCraft 2 pre-Alpha, shown below. More fans reacted, and fansite polls popped up.

As the time for the auditions came and went, it became clear that even though Robert and Glynnis had both expressed an interest in returning for StarCraft 2, neither of them would. Possibly too late to do anything about it, the fan reactions have now increased tenfold, with internet petitions, vocal reactions and polls on Blizzard's official forums, as well as more fansite reactions and even videos urging the community to ask Blizzard to bring back the original authors.

Even though many feel strongly about this issue, most of the fans have also clearly stated that it's not a "deal breaker": They will still buy and play StarCraft 2 even without their favourite actors, but they still want their favourite characters to sound the same. Fans with less interest in the actual story line don't care at all: StarCraft is primarily a multiplayer RTS game. In the end we'll just have to wait and see what Blizzard chooses to do.

This is Glynnis Talken voice acting Kerrigan in the BlizzCon sneak peek cinematic for StarCraft 2:

Sure it’d be nice to have them back but I won’t go on an RL killing spree if they aren’t in it.

NOTE: Gallery seems bugged. I click on either of the pictures and I got a 404 Error.

Blizzard at least have to give an explanation. Seriously what’s wrong with Glynnis voice? I got the chills when I first heard her come out from the darkness.

@ Pies: Yeah, I think most fans think the same. I hope all of us do! O.O

And I have no problem with the gallery…?

@ Sayaf: I have no idea, I think she was great. Sure, lots of modification through effects, but you can definitely remember the Kerrigan from SC1!

Just checked it. If they don't consider it news as they say then why they are bothering and talking about it.

Indeed. And look at the tone of the article + the poll... almost 20% STILL voted they want the old actors....

Don't worry so much about Jostiq or other sites that makes fun out of it. They think it's the same as the D3 art controversy, which it obviously isn't. And we have not said we won't buy the game or anything, it's just to have Blizzard realize some fans do want the original voices. They are just 100% clueless, thinking we only hear those voices in the cinematics. Really really clueless.

blizzard already changed Raynor’s appearance for no good reason (the novels said he was bald, in sc1 he was bald, c’mon blizzard turn the consistancy on) so I think his voice has to match his new appearance, which Robert Clotworthy wouldn’t do to well for. They needed to find the most redneck hick person ever for his voice, which they did. i don’t hate the new raynor that much. I’ll buy the game.

The voice you heard from some videos will not be the one used either. None has heard the voices of either Raynor or Kerrigan how it will be in the game...

They have talked about Raynor`s change in appearance, I think they said that he seems bald or is bald because of the problems of making hair look good on him with so few pixels. Im not 100% sure about that though. Also I dont think he is bald, he just cut his hair short. You can see they sort of make fun of it in one of the posters in Jimmy`s bar on Mar Sara. When they click on Jimmy`s wanted poster you see a picture of how he looked like in SC1, and then he says: "Come on, I`m prettier than that". I have nothing against his change in appearance, and I`m not really that much against the voice change either. Still, I do want to hear their reason for not including them, and also make up my mind about it when we actually get to hear the new voice.

At the end we will just have to wait and see. Who knows, even those who are against it now might actually love the new actors smile Then again, the opposite might be true as well ^^.
