Blizzard HQ Visit 2009

Posted 23rd Jun 2009 08:25 AM by Ape

There is a rumour that a few guys from Team Liquid went to a press event at the Blizzard HQ yesterday and that over 200 members of press attended/will attend the event. There seems to be a NDA (Non-Discolsure Agreement) applied for the Blizzard HQ visit, so any information from there will be available next Monday. Some information seems to have leaked anyway, but remember that nothing is confirmed by Blizzard.

All those press-people can't fit in on one day, so the NDA is likely in place so everyone attending can prepare their material, and everyone can release it at the same time. No one can publish any information before the last visitor have been there.

    - Replay now has backwards/rewind capabilities and the new replay; observer functionality is "good".
    - Spine Crawler has new model and attack.
    - All game icons are now in color, no more blue red and green icons.
    - Add-ons are compatible with multiple buildings so you can make one for a factory and later lift the buildings so that a starport gets it (this was revealed over a year ago).
    - When you cancel a production you will get 100% money back.
    - Mass mutalisks are "deadly".
    - The new Zerg art looks "so amazing".
    - There was no announcement for the beta.
    - There will be more information after a week, when the NDA ends.
    - There is no longer dual gas. The tested build has SC1 style gas mechanics (this is confirmed to be FALSE by Karune).

More information after the break.

Team Liquid also posted a picture from the event. Looks like it's part of the new Battle.net since you can clearly see the text "BATTLE.NET" and logo on the top left corner. You can also see what looks like an avatar on the top right corner, so we can assume avatars are supported on Battle.net 2.0.

Thanks to Xion for collecting this information. Also see the original forum thread about the event.

Yeah, but that could be the default avatar. Since they are showing it on such a notable place, the avatar itself must be important. That means it might be customizable.

I wonder if it’s possible that Blizzard made week-long NDA just to confuse us. Maybe they’ll put up Blizzcast on Thursday for example, announce Beta, and lift NDA earlier. Blizz likes to surprise people and next Monday as announcement day seems too obvious.

might be but i would like to strongly support this theory: "There is a rumour that over 200 members of press have been invited there. They can’t all fit there at the same so that sounds a good reason for the NDA. Nobody can publish any information before the last visitor have been there."

“There is no longer dual gas. The tested build has SC1 style gas mechanics.”

Could someone explain this statement? Does this mean there will only be one gas extractor location instead of two? This would be a pity since the latest BR3 showed some nice chokepoints due to two gas extractors at the mineral site.

I believe that there will be only one gas location per a base place. There might be still dual gas points on some maps / some single locations. The idea why they added the dual gas was the new gas mechanics. You could refill a depleted gas extractor, but there was only a little initial gas. They removed this feature, so there is no need for additional gas anymore. I think it's a good thing.

I'm glad it's back to how it was. Splitting up the geysers was detrimental to the Zerg economy (need one extra Drone to create the geyser, and three extra ones to mine it).

So wait, does that mean that there will be 5000 gas per extractor like before in SC 1? Will people still be able to harvest gas at 2 gas per trip when it's depleted and 8 when the extractor has gas? Oh well, I guess we'll find out from those people have a beta key. Well anyway, I'm glad they FINALLY decided to take out the annoying gas refill-by-spending-minerals mechanic. It just seems to make to game more annoying. In the end, the player would just use the minerals to make a new expansion and use the other extractors rather than using valuable minerals to refill depleted extractors. I mean let's face it, when it comes to Starcraft players are going to take whatever path is the most powerful or efficient strategy. However, it's a good thing the Starcraft 2 devs decided to experiment with the mechanic to see if it's any good because now they have more knowledge and experience at improving Starcraft than before. Let's just hope they don't put it back in. heh heh

I understood that there will be many visitors visiting the place during the week. They don't want that the first ones to visit could post the news first.
