Blizzard: ICCUP Is a Pirate Server

Posted 29th Jun 2009 12:31 PM by Leord

When I was visiting Blizzard HQ last week, I had a chance to talk with the developers, among others, Rob Pardo, the big boss of gamemaking there. Most of the interesting topics from these discussions you can find on IncGamers' StarCraft II developer interview, but one little snippet is more interesting for StarCraft-fans specifically than gamers in general. It's related to the fact that Blizzard no longer will support LAN play in StarCraft II.

Blizzard will not allow services like ICCUP in StarCraft II.

Blizzard Quote:
Many players decide to play on ICCUP, would you allow servers like ICCUP in StarCraft II?

Neu. Because that's one of the reasons we don't have LAN play is because we do want everyone to play Battle.net we want to make sure that is a great experience. If there is a reason why people are not enjoying battle.net we want to correct it there. But we want to make sure people are playing on Battle.net.

They are using a modified version of battle.net, they are actually using your own battle.net, not LAN.

Yeah, which is even worse! That's called a pirate server.

I contacted one of the admins, Yello-Ant on ICCUP, and he said "will see about SC2 ^^" so they might have a plan. I gave him Rob's e-mail, and he is going to contact Blizzard for further dialogue.

How LAN or iCCUP is piracy? It is just a good thing for Blizzard. They don’t need to maintain so many servers themselves. Also the players may get some extra features implemented by the community. And they still got the money, since you have to own the game to play on LAN.

You totally wrong. People don't need a cdkey to play LAN or pirate server, so it is bad for Blizzard. I agree with removing LAN from SC2 and hope BN2.0 will have no more pirate server.

“If there is a reason why people are not enjoying battle.net we want to correct it there.”

I have a reason: you must have internet connection to play on battle.net! Will they fix that?:P

When 15 of us get together in some hall without internet connection(and we do all the time, 3 times for 2 days last month)... we will be forced to still play sc1 and d2 instead of 2 and 3… GG blizz

Well, then just plug an internet cable in it and everything is up and running. Sharing StarCraft with other people who don't have their own valid copy of the game is illegal and against their license. So far I'd love to play on Blizzard's Battle.net 2.0 servers and have some support for custom map making.

plug internet cable into what? i had to reread what i wrote and still cant find why did you say that in reply to me there is no internet connection so nowhere to plug "internet cable", noone mentioned sharing starcraft or anything... so all it does is promote sitting in basement at home and playing online... but we prefer to get together, eat, drink and play

Oh man, I so much get what you're talking 'bout. There nothing like 4, 8 or even more people playin' in the same room, screamin' at each other, rambling about tactics, enjoying meals and (sometimes) beers together... and know it's all gone... Let's be honest, nearly nobody have internet connection capable of providing connection for 6-8 computer AT ONCE (and even if - it's gonna be major lag-fest). Did Blizzard though 'bout that? Do they wanna alienate us, Starcraft players? GODDAMMIT, THINK, BLIZZARD, THINK. It hurts me to say that, Blizzard, but if there will be any project (even illegal) involving SC2 without use of the internet, I'll be all over it (even if I would have to donate something).

The may be right it can be considered a pirate server. However, I think it would suit Blizzard well to give these guys a “special spot” in the new service, because I do feel a service like ICCup did contribute quite a bit to the long live Starcraft has had.

So basically Blizzard wants a monopoly on how the game is played, competitively or not.  Talk about biting the hand…

While I understand the move and they have the right to prevent piracy, I totally agree with you. I hope they can come up with a graceful solution to this or it might bite back.
