Blizzard Updates Beta Signups Page

Posted 17th Mar 2009 04:59 PM by Leord

This might be absolutely nothing, but the page that Blizzcon.com/beta redirects to has changed.

Sure, it's technically a WoW beta page, but seeing as the new Battle.net isn't online yet (besides the forums, which are upgraded), it's not unlikely that the StarCraft beta signup will take place on the WoW site, primarily just because it's all set up for handling large amounts of signups, like the 15000 that BlizzCon 2008 produced.

The page was changed just a few hours ago, around 1PM GMT, and the change implies that they are preparing for a beta of some sort. It does not have to be a StarCraft 2 beta, they could just be finishing the page for the next WoW expansion a year or so from now... Regardless, this is what it used to say:

Welcome to the Future Beta Sign-Up Form!

Note: We are no longer taking Worldwide Invitational '08 or BlizzCon '07 beta code registrations or the Wrath of the Lich King beta.

The new version looks like this:

Welcome to the Beta Sign-Up Form!

Along with the Beta Sign-up code, please enter a valid email address that will be active for some time. As it may be a while before the invitations are sent for this beta test, we want to make sure you'll receive your invite! Once you enter your information, you should receive a confirmation email. We will email you again once invitations are being sent; the email you receive at that point will contain further instructions. Be advised that it may be quite some time before this beta test begins, and this sign-up may not be for the next beta test to become available. Thank you, and we'll see you in the test!

On top of that, they also added a submission form for a Beta Sign Up Code, as you can see on the image to the right here. It's possible to enter info, but the codes given out from BlizzCon 2008 are not valid (yet).

You might think: "oh, they removed all mentions of anything related to events older than BlizzCon 2008 and WoW", and this is correct. However, there is no mention of StarCraft II, and they COULD just be re-writing the page for future WoW products. Having said that, it's still likely that the upcoming StarCraft II beta signup will take place on the WoW site, since the only thing upgraded about the current Battle.net is the forums.

The WoW site has it all set up, and it would be easier for Blizzard to handle 15000 signups on a system they know work rather than repeating the ticket sales issue of BlizzCon 2008 on the Blizzard Store. It could also be that they are setting it up on the WoW site, and are going to move that software over to Battle.net, or StarCraft2.com.

What any StarCraft fan also need to remember is that just because the signup starts, does not mean the Beta is very close. It could still be up to 2-3 months away after the signups start!

What do you think? Could it be the StarCraft II beta, or just general maintenance on the WoW site? If so, does it have any significance to the fact that they have said they are close?

Update!
Karune made a comment on the possibilities of a beta signup. The question is if he meant the page mentioned in this news item, or some other page...

Update 2!
StarCraft II beta signups are now working again!

Update 3!
This has now been confirmed by Karune.

Interesting to say the least.

I’d like to believe this is in fact for Starcraft II beta,
I don’t think they are already planning a beta signup for a WoW expansion…

Gonna keep an eye on it for sure

I’m curious to see what this is.

Maybe an internal error within Blizzard’s web page, causing the signup page to reappear? It is maintainence day for WoW. I don’t see a WoW expansion anytime soon. They’re not even near half way done with WoTLK’s content.

Handling beta sign ups through wow is not far fetched and of course this could be a wow expansion thing… I have a feeling that we are going to have exciting news next month!

They haven’t even announced the next expansion yet. I am pretty sure it’s not the expansion.

Also, the page itself has been up for ages. It just looked like I mentioned in the first quote, and no signup (at least not after WotLK beta was over)

Oki, waiting for:
- Q&A 50 (this week, promised to come this week)
- Battle Report 2 (soon, promised a long time, date unknown)
- SC2: WoL Beta (soon after Battle Report, presumably)

I think this is false alarm. I am just hoping for the next sure thing, the BR2. After that, we’ll see smile

Depends on what you mean. It’s just a notification that the page is changed, and it COULD mean it’s changed for preparing the beta. wink

We’ll see. I think it’s a pretty good chance it’s the page where we’ll be adding SC beta codes in the future, or they are fiddling with the programming/design now, on that page, to move it to the Starcraft2.com domain.

I actually think it is pretty safe to say they are. They already state (could look-up the source for you) that they do have an internal date. On top of that they also stated they are in the final stretch so we should be close (in blizzard terms).

Hehe, the source is not hard to find nowadays, with the Beta Center! But yeah, you are right! It's likely that the WoW site is either used for SC keys, or they are trying the software out for Battle.net/StarCraft2.com. Also, a Beta announcement on April 1st sounds more and more likely by the day, since it's very unlikely that the beta will start on that date, with no signup out.
