BlizzCon in 2009!

Posted 17th Feb 2009 04:19 PM by Leord

Our sister site IncGamers.com reports that Blizzard just has confirmed that BlizzCon gaming convention, Blizzards own showcasing event, will be held at the Anaheim Convention Centre, Anaheim, California between 21 and 22 August this year.

The BlizzCon event famously sold out almost immediately last year when tickets went on sale, and to respond to the growing popularity, the event will have one more convention hall to host it's guests. We will of course be there in Los Angeles to convey the glam, and possibly new MMO announcement (go SC MMO!) this summer! This is the press release:

BLIZZCON® 2009 ANNOUNCED

Blizzard Entertainment® gaming celebration to return to Anaheim Convention Center on
August 21-22

PARIS, France -- February 17, 2009 -- Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today announced plans for its fourth BlizzCon® gaming convention, to be held at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California on Friday, August 21 and Saturday, August 22. BlizzCon is a celebration of the global player communities surrounding Blizzard Entertainment®’s Warcraft®, StarCraft®, and Diablo® universes. In response to the festival’s increasing popularity, this year’s event has been expanded from three convention halls to four.

“We’ve been amazed by the incredible response to each of our previous BlizzCon events,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We’re pleased to be bringing the convention back to Anaheim this year, and we look forward to this new opportunity to meet Blizzard gamers from around the world.”

BlizzCon will offer a wide variety of activities throughout the two-day event. In addition to serving as a gathering place for Blizzard Entertainment gaming communities, attendees will be able to enjoy:

• Hands-on play time with upcoming Blizzard Entertainment games
• Discussion panels with Blizzard Entertainment developers
• Competitive and casual tournaments for players to showcase their talents
• Community contests with great prizes
• Commemorative merchandise based on Blizzard Entertainment’s game universes
• A silent auction
• More exciting activities and attractions to be announced
Further details, including ticket availability and pricing, will be announced on the official BlizzCon website, http://www.blizzcon.com, as the event draws closer.

To keep pace with the continued growth of World of Warcraft as well as development on other Blizzard Entertainment games, the company is currently hiring for numerous open positions. More information on available career opportunities can be found at http://eu.blizzard.com/en/jobs/.

It's likely SOME sort of announcement will be made there, and while a StarCraft MMO (or whatever that unannounced MMO is for) might be a good candidate, it's also very likely that we'll get to see what new WoW expansion will be released. Not as exciting as other prospects, but they could also announce both the WoW expansion as well as the MMO. As far as Diablo 3 goes, I do hope we'll have seen all the classes before August, at the very least. Showing the 5th class possibly, but we should really have seen both the 4th and the 5th by then...

So, this confirms the 2nd Exhibition Blizzard won’t be attending as the biggest one, GamesCom, is held over that weekend also.

I can’t believe there is a new Blizzcon within 10 months after the previous one. Seems they are announcing the next-gen mmo this year. And if the Starcraft: Ghost manga and pocket book are any indication—on top of the trademark attempt in china—its a Starcraft Ghost MMO.

Things on my mind:
1. Will 20000 instead of 15000 tickets be enough this time around (not likely)
2. What happen to WWI between the cons?
3. Will we get more lore panels seeing as that will be the only difference between SC2:wings of liberty and the zerg game.
4. Would be intersting to see how D3 build advances in 10 months.
5. Please put that away Leord, there is a lady present raspberry

I think they have said that the new MMO is a completely new IP. One of the top level Blizzard guys confirmed it in an interview and the news spread quickly a while back. It’s not a Diablo MMO, SC MMO, nor even a WoW 2. They are trying something completely new for this game.

If that is really going to be the case then it will be controversial no matter what they made up :)

I never saw Blizzard confirm that it was a new IP, do you have a link?

You are right, that's why I am still holding out for the SC MMO. There was a news item from the Wanderinggoblin.com some time ago at a big games seminar where Mike Morhaim hinted at a SC MMO. I need to digg all these things up!

We'll see, but if it's the SC MMO that I hope it is, I will be VERY glad...

Yes, the thing is that during BlizzCon they did announce that they DID have an unannounced project, and that's when Paul Sams said this comment. The thing is that they have LIED in the past about developments. Not just withholding information, but actually lied, so besides announcements (positive statements, they have never lied about), I don't trust them, really... Also, you could interpret that the new IP might be a very new way of gaming, like it's SC MMO, but plays a lot different than WoW because a person also has a ship, or something like that. Just the fact that it's completely different could warrant that saying. Again, the way you can interpret it is also that it's a new franchise, another world, a fourth one (or perhaps lost vikings or Rock n Roll Racing MMO?). I think it's more likely to be that, in terms of how they said things, but I would MUCH rather have a SC MMO.

I think it may be taken out of context at that time (like most of the Blizzard community, like to read between the lines). I did some more research on it to make sure. It was shortly after WotLK release; I think it was from the COO of Blizzard (Paul Sams), whom talked about the unannounced MMO. He mentioned that the project was going to be a completely new game from ground up, making people think it will going to be a new IP. Or it could be an entirely new genre (a mix of MMO+something else).
