Breaking News: Chinese StarCraft 2 Beta Starts in May?

Posted 21st Apr 2009 12:37 PM by kuangtu

We've heard a lot of things through the grapevine from China recently, and we reported on some of what is happening in the Middle Kingdom in regards too the StarCraft II Beta yesterday. The three biggest Chinese StarCraft 2 fansites announced that they will be running activities to hand out beta keys this week (or soon). All of them are officially approved by Blizzard to be Chinese StarCraft fansites, so it's unlikely a coincidence for all three to announce something like this. They are most likely doing this going on more than just pure guesses.

Late last night we found the news editor for sc2p.com who post the news article about the beta key giveaway activity plan, "CoNia," and pinned him down for a brief interview. I have translated the interview from Chinese and posted below.

Please note that sc2p.com is part of Sgamer.com, much like StarcraftWire.net is part of IncGamers.com, and when we say "Blizzard" we mean "Blizzard's China Representative Office."

StarcraftWire.net: Hi, I'm Kuangtu from Starcraftwire.net.

English speaking fans are really concerned about the beta news from China, since it seems Chinese fansites get inside news earlier than English sites. Could you tell me who in Blizzard gave your site the news on beta?

CoNia: I can't answer your question right now because we just get the news from the higher-up. I will answer your question shortly.

StarcraftWire.net: Ok, I'll wait.

CoNia: It was a Blizzard Community manager in China. I don't know his name.

StarcraftWire.net: So someone from Blizzard's Representative Office in China informed Sgamer?

CoNia: Yes. We announced the plan of beta giveaway activity after we were informed by the officials.

StarcraftWire.net: Have you got a batch of beta keys? Does this activity fully depend on Sgamer to giveaway the key, or does it need to follow certain rules by Blizzard?

CoNia: No, Blizzard is still waiting for our design on the activity, then we can start it, the winner(s) will get beta key(s), but we decide the details on how the beta keys will be handed out.

StarcraftWire.net: So before the activity start you need Blizzard to give you permission first?

CoNia: Yes, we need the authorization from Blizzard on the activity, we actually handed out the plan last Friday.

StarcraftWire.net: Did Blizzard inform your site by something in writing or just orally?

CoNia:I'm not really sure, but I don't think this kind of notification is in writing. Since beta is coming soon, many fansites just want any kind of inside news, even if Blizzard reveals a little they will try to give more publicity.

StarcraftWire.net: Last question, did Blizzard give any hint on when beta will start?

CoNia: If I say there is no hint at all it wouldn't be true, but I can't give you more details. I can give you a rough time. Before May, but I can't be sure.

StarcraftWire.net: I can understand it is important to keep the date a secret. However, it is very close if the rough time is before May.

CoNia: Yes, that's why the activity is in hurry. We didn't get any notification before. We started to plan the activity right after they gave the "go."

StarcraftWire.net: Ok, thank you very much for your answers.

Make sure to read about the background on the Chinese StarCraft 2 fansites preparing for Beta to get the whole picture.

It's extremely important to point out that we can't be sure about all the information in this interview is true or not, as it's not from Blizzard itself, and the news editor could potentially be lying to us. However, the creditability of sc2p is generally very high so the question is; did Blizzard's Representative Office in China only mean to let the fansites start to warm up, or maybe the representative office really got some news form the development team?

Another very important thing to point out here is that the release date "before May" is an estimate by CoNia, and if he's wrong, it does not meant specifically that he lied. May is just over a week away, and a beta seems very unlikely to be announced AND started before May, even if it's in China. If he's wrong, it's most likely a misunderstanding between Blizzard and the fansite. We have contacted Blizzard for clarification on this, and we will update the story as soon as new information is made available.

Make sure to follow all beta updates in the StarCraft II Beta Centre!

Indeed, if this pans out. We've seen a lot in the way of beta rumors though, but I choose to be optimistic on sources that are credible (such as this).

Certainly sounds like a unintentional leak to me. And i can see a beta coming out next month. It seems to me they have very little to do on the game besides balancing.

A lot of activity from the Chinese websites the last few days…If he says that the Chinese’s community manager told them to send their plan for the beta key giveaway, then the beta really is coming soon. But I really doubt it would be before May.

Did you guys (scwire) receive any indication from a blizzard rep to send in your plans for how you would give away some keys?

If not, then starting in the Asian market could be a smart thing to do, as the popularity and the number of people that will apply for the beta will probably be a bit bigger, so they could give them more time to prepare and be ready for it.

I agree, enough rumours, I want hard data. If Karune spells it out tonight and gives us a date I will be happy.

I agree I want hard data, but I'd rather take rumours than complete silence....

@Leord: A agree on that as well. I would rather hear something now and then then nothing at all as long as I can determine its validity so I can adjust my expectations accordingly.

@Freelancer: I couldn't agree more. I also would rather hear something than not hearing anything at all.

Don’t get too hung up on the release date specifically. Look at the whole interview, and there are lots of interesting facts there.

I don’t think he’s lying, and besides the release date, there really is no reason to be wrong wither. The date is obviously just speculation.

great news thanks for the iview guys! keep the information coming!

looking at the recent delays with br2 blizz accepted just to release it simultaniously in all supported languages i strongly doubt that they will stat the beta at different times for different regions.

all the same what the chinese guy has to says sounds reliable to me. i think they get ready to give out the fansite-program-beta keys something like next week. i dont want to speculate about the beta start anymore though.

yea, I think the beta server will be in US only, well, that's what happened before. It would be a huge change if they do tests in different regions. And, yes, none of the sites have the keys yet, but Blizzard(Rep Office in China) told them to start the activities, or at least asked them to hand in a plan for it.

Really? Are you sure? In this case, China might be a HUGE cash cow for SC2, I thought they might have local servers to increase the experience...

Which part are you talking about? I don't think there will be local servers for Beta on SC2(still, not sure, pure guess), but I'm sure there will be servers when the game is released.

I agree with Arziak when he said that blizzard is in international logic.

The fact that chinese (btw, why chinese and not korean ?) sites have the informations earlier is suspect but obviously the beta’s start at the beginning of May is very likely.

ps:  GrUm, you can edit your original post instead of re write another wink

I want to make it VERY clear that with my experience in Blizz etc, it’s VERY unlikely to actually start before May in China!

Having said that, it’s still quite likely to start SOON, and that they might actually have had contact with Chinese CMs…

It’s important to note that blizz said sc2 beta will come out after the starcraft 2 only blizzcast comes out.

May be blizzcast devoted to SC2 prepearing separetly? If it would be pre-beta blizzcast, I think, it will have pretty huge content.

Yes,guys, don’t hang up to the beta starting date. The interesting part is all those fansite got some news from Blizzard’s China Representative office. Now I have already heard from two sites that the number of key they get is depdend on how many people will participate their activities. More people join the activity, more keys they will get. (of course, not 1:1. not even close)
