Chinese Blizzard Fansite Summit Update - Map Editor “Confirmed”

Update by Medievaldragon:
Blizzard has informed us of this:

Blizzard Quote:
We’ve not confirmed anything about the inclusion of map editor in the beta yet. And we don’t have system specs yet either, and any specifics about system specs going around are 100% speculation at this point.

Stephen, the admin on of our Chinese friend site SC2c.com, just came back from the first Blizzard fansites summit in China. He brought us some interesting new information and something we already knew.

RTS community manager Jerome Wu and three more Blizzard China region representatives had conducted this summit. The two hours conference was mainly addressed on Blizzard's development in Mainland China and how fansites are a part of it. This is the first Blizzard fansite summit that ever in China, so it's a bit rushed. Blizzard promised next time it will be much more fun.

Here are some facts Stephen got from Blizzard reps:

1. Beta will include map editor, this is for sure, but we don't know if the editor has some limitation to it.

2. The keys that Blizzard's China Representative Office promised for the Chinese sites are the keys for North America beta, which will start before any other regions. However, the keys will be handed out in batches.

3. The map editor (final version?) in SC2 is very powerful, RPG map making has infinite possibilities. (Sounds familiar?)

4. Beta will only have multiplayer part, no single player campaign content. You need to connect with Battle.net even if you want to player with the AI.

5. Current demo doesn't have RPG maps. We don't know if beta will have any yet.

6. Insane AI will cheat, their resources gathering rate will be twice as fast as normal. Other AI's will not cheat.

7. Beta will have Battle.net Ladder.

8. Classic maps are remade. For example, Lost Temple.

9. About spec, it will require really good hardware to support the highest setting which will look magnificent.

10. Mainstream dual core processor, +2G memory, +9800GT and the like will be required in order to set the graphics to medium.

11. As a guideline: A laptop from two years ago may still be able to play SC2.

12. Blizzard Chinese official site is in preparation. No info when it will be online, but it will be "soon".

13. You can save replays in Beta and the features in the replays are much better than the original StarCraft.

Above info are coming from Blizzard representatives, it's based on the alpha version that they've played, beta version may have some changes.

Update by Kuangtu
Due to some questioning on "fact #10", I want to clearfy that the original report in Chinese was quite simple on this. It is possible that miscommunication happened during the summit, it was recorded from oral conversation. Despite the original report was saying SC2 needs 9800GT for medium setting, by my understanding what Blizzard reps meant could be 9800GT can’t reach the highest setting, but only from medium to medium high. It is very hard to say about the spec and settings cause we don’t know what kind of monitor, duel core CPU, or memory they are using. Honestly, I don’t know much about PC hardwares, but I know the proformence of the game will be totally different if you use a 17 inches CRT compare to 24 inches LCD monitor, old pentium dual cpu to the newest core duo 2, even memory can vary from 667 to 1066. Also it would be very different if there are 2 units on the screen compare to 200. It may various, nothing is set in stone.

Edits by Leord:

Worth noting is that while the Chinese community managers have "confirmed" the map editor to be included, but a little Blizzard bird whispered to me that the editor will NOT launch with the beta, and they are currently not promising the map editor (just so they won't disappoint us if something unexpected comes up).

Of course, this could just be that different offices have received different orders from Blizzard HQ. With the Chinese reps promising a Map Editor, and giving details about it, it's probably VERY LIKELY that the editor will be included. However, I take the words of Blizzard over a semi-anonymous Chinese rep any day of the week, so "no promises" yet!

The system requirements, also match the ones Kalos predicted for the last year or so (read his hardware purchase guide to get your best bang for the buck when upgrading to a SC2-compatible machine!)

This seems to confirm the Chinese rumours as TRUE, but obviously the site's webmasters personal speculation of beta starting "before May" was wrong. However, Karune is the main Community Manager for RTS and StarCraft, and since he debunked this rumour, we can't say 100% either way. Small update! My friend Webnet, admin of StarCraft-Source.com just posted the quote from Karune. It's slightly cryptic, but should indicate that the Chinese sites are just gauging their possible fansite keys. If this interpretation is true, then the Chinese sites were just lying about their keys...

Also, us Europeans feel a bit disappointed that basically everyone gets to try the beta before us.

The information as stated above is all about the beta. So in that perspective the above would read as: The Starcraft 2 beta will only include the multiplayer component. In multiplayer you will be able to play against an AI opponent as well, but you still need to connect to battle.net before you are able to do so.

“10. Mainstream dual core processor, +2G memory, +9800GT and the like will be required in order to set the graphics to medium.”

Sounds strange to me… If you just can play on medium with a 9800GT, what will you need to play on high? You can play Crysis on Very High (Second highest level) with a 9800GT (It still runs well on a 8600GTS).

So I guess they mean “maximum details” and not “medium details”

That's crazy... the details were meant to be maximum and not medium for sure, else they are really out of their mind

well, I got a dual core, 4GB and a 9800GT smile
but I’m a bit astounded that it’s for medium
would be great if the editor would be included,
on the other hand that’d mean I have to get me a key ^^’

The above stats are probably beta stats. Even so, they do surprise me because of how high they are.

High resolution : QuadCore, radeon 4880 ect.. I think it ok for medium détails : play on medium with a 9800GT ect.. and LOW resolution for a laptop from two years ago and low chipset video :p.

I have a Blizzcon Beta Key. But I live in Norway “EU”. Does it mean that I will be able to play when Beta comes out, and not wait for EU release of Beta?

yes, you are right. Blizzcon beta key holder can play North America beta. You don't have to wait for EU phase.

These requirements are crazy….
I really hope they are wrong or just for an unoptimized version. That would really be a wrong move from Blizzard.

The monitors they are using probably have really high resolution. Don't worry about it, nothing is final.

I dont think the requirements will be crazy because the WOW expansion that came out like 5 months ago had min requirements of like 512mb of ram and like 12g hard drive so I dont think the requirements will be far from that. Blizzard is good at making games that most computers can play.
