Development Updates from Karune

Posted 2nd Apr 2009 02:30 AM by Deep.Thought

StarCraft's 11th anniversary, fansite countdowns, and certain articles created a huge buzz and great expectations from the community this week. We were all greatly sobered and brought back down to earth when these key dates came and passed with no big news from the StarCraft II development team.

However, some people didn't take the lack of serious news well. The battle.net forums saw some members of the community lash out at Blizzard for not giving the public enough information. As I see it, StarCraft II has had the most transparent development of any game I have ever witnessed. Perhaps Blizzard has spoiled the community too much. Instead of being angered by a dry patch of updates we should be thankful for the abundance of information we do receive.

Community Manager Karune attempted to quell the animosity by letting us in on the developmental stages of some key updates the community has been long awaiting. Read what he had to say below:
Blizzard Quote: (Source)
To give you guys an update, the Battle Report is still in localization and needs to be ready in all supported regions before it will go up. Many times this adds to the development timeline, but it allows everyone worldwide to be able to experience Blizzard updates at the same time, so no particular region feels neglected.

In regards to beta, I'm seeing many websites and hoaxes messing with people's expectations. These are not official announcements, and when that time comes, the official announcement will be written by a blue or posted up on official websites like battle.net and StarCraft2.com.

The developers are hard at work in getting StarCraft II to a beta phase. With each of the Q&As, you can see the types of updates they are working on. More and more, we are trying to include 'behind the scenes' type content in the Q&As (localized in all regions as well), which unfortunately adds a little bit to the production timeline of Q&As as well, but gives the community something to 'see' in addition to what they 'read.' Comparing Q&A 49 & 50, they have changed drastically from say Q&A 1 & 2. In order to get more content out there as well, we have begun soliciting questions from fansites a part of our fan site program, so stay on the look out for those when they get answered.

We have a habit of holding things back at Blizzard to make sure when we finally show everyone, it will be up to par - we want to make sure it will our products are something both the community will love to play and something that we too can be very proud of.

UPDATE!

A few more reassurances from Karune on the forum:

Blizzard Quote: (Source)
Honestly, I feel you guys - though in actuality, there is little the community doesn't already know about in terms of gameplay with StarCraft II. Battle.net and Single Player will be rolled out in their own spotlight features in the future, because there is much to talk about in those areas.

Hang in there, I think the Fan Q&As will be good, and Battle Report #2 shouldn't be too far down the road.

UPDATE #2!

Looks like the Battle Report 2 gameplay has already been chosen, casted, and transcribed. Blizzard is in the final stage of translating the transcription so that fans from all regions of the world can enjoy the action simultaneously.

Blizzard Quote: (Source)
Are you able to give us an ETA on the Battle report?

They added a transcript to the Battle Report, so that is still in the localization process. Once that is done in all regions, we will be good to go.

UPDATE #3!
Karune also tried to make more peace with the community by lightening up the mood with funny videos!

To me, Blizzard being transparent means giving out gameplay information and taking into consideration the community’s feedback. I define “information” as something that brings out meaningful discussion within the community. This is without question what they had been doing up until the first battle report. After which the community’s focus greatly turned towards the beta, and many people stopped discussing gameplay and balance because for the doing so was irrelevant until we could actually play. IMO we’ve moved past the level of content Blizzard is giving us. This is not a good thing, but it did happen.

P.S. The CAPTCHA system for registering is painfully bad.

What we get for the 11th anniversary is -

Terratron

I did chuckle a bit at first then… bitterness struck in and made me realize that instead of another battle report, a beta date, new unit annoucements (or atleast playable ones with strategic value), we are given a “transformer” mock up…

o well Blizzard got me good for April Fools ;/.

yeah, fans are going to lash out more and more once they figure out how long blizzard is willing to take their time with this. by 2010 we will all be bitter as hell, even you, deep.thought. you will go from defending blizzard in your news to simply bitching about them. it’s hard to believe there are still fans with optimism, but that will soon be crushed in the coming months of no beta.

And i’ll agree to the point that sc2 development is transparent, but the release date is more shrouded in mystery than any other game in history (i would make the exception of duke nukem forever, but even they disclose release dates.) I’d say that if the release date of sc2 were revealed, I would be happier, even if they don’t hit target dates half the time.

I don't think we can start comparing SC2 to Duke Nukem Forever just yet... If Blizzcon passes with no news of beta I will be surprised. ...But still optimistic.

Does it mean we can expect the second Battle Report within a few days?

Don't count on it, there going to make it as difficult as they possibly can. If they would just release it in normal english, other websites and fans would translate it for all the regions faster than Blizzard can.

Well, since they have transcripted it, I would say it's soon. He wouldn't even have mentioned it if the community wasn't so pissed off in the first place.

What makes me a bit bitter about blizzard is thi quote
“In regards to beta, I’m seeing many websites and hoaxes messing with people’s expectations. These are not official announcements, and when that time comes, the official announcement will be written by a blue or posted up on official websites like battle.net and StarCraft2.com.”

I mean they did saw this in the forums as us and did not debunk it when it started, they new the community expected the beta or at least an battle report and now the timers ar up and it’s the 1st of april,  they finaly debunk it. It feels to me like cheap marketing really. But then again they are not responsible for what other sites say… tough they should have seen this comming. =/
And for the april fool’s: I liked the one for diablo 3 beter! ;o)

I agree totally 100%. They did not anything in whole previous week, they didnt say anything. just silence. They let us think what we wanted to think all theese days. Cheap marketing, it is what it is. Karune and whole blizzard are playing with us and they think we are stupid.

I think the biggest issue with this “We want more” attitude from fans are, that Blizzard introduced Battle Report 1 to early. I mean the timeline between BR1 and BR2 are way to long. We should rly be seeing BR3/4 at this date. I mean, come on, why even make a sticky bluepost on battle.net/forums with text saying like this “In order to give you a closer look at the fast-paced, intense, and exciting-to-watch multiplayer matches of StarCraft II, we’re creating a series of videos for the official website”

A “series” ? =) It’s soon Beta time and we are waiting for BR2!

I don’t think we will see a BR3, but that I don’t care about. When Beta is up and running. Some of it will hit the youtube. Fans will be happy!

PS: I’m new here, and this is my first post. I’ve been a long time user of the site. Now I have joined in to the forums here because of the “top-secret” Beta forum. I’m waiting for my “camera man” to show up and take a picture of me + my card. See you soon! smile

Regarding the Battle Report:

It will most likely come within the next few days, since it now is transcripted and is being translated. Let me explain WHY I think it’s close. It’s all to do with the progress of making it:

- Play lots of games until you find the perfect one. This is a long step:
—Need to be about 20min long.
—Should involves a good selection of units.
—Should be interesting to watch.
- Make a basic script.
- PR-ify the basic script.
- Make a voicover.
- Changing/retaking voiceover until it’s PR-ified again.
—Will take several attempts, and requires someone important in the team.
- Writing final voiceover transcript.
- Translate transcript and make web page localization.
- PR-ify translations.
- Release.

Picking right match and PR-ifying it is what takes time. If we cut out written transcript and translations, we could get battle reports a lot more frequently.

We’ll likely see the transcripts very soon, since it’s just a few more steps left.

this news is really stupid. they ARE NOT being transparent and they didn’t spoiled enough information at all… for the love of god, dont be silly, DO NOT endorse Blizzard! you MUST claim a good game and in a reasonable timeline because you pay for it. it’s been 2 years that they’re in the final stage of the developement and we dont have a pale idea of what they are really doing since 2 years… changing icons, some abilities sometimes, changing dubbers… this is so annoying.
Again: it’s been 2 years that the game appears as being playable and enjoyable and they still claim they dont have a clue of when it’ll come out.
We are in a state where the best we can do is to wait for BATTLE REPORTS… lol… not the game, not even the beta, that will be asking too much, we are waiting for battle reports and that’s the best we can expect from them…
pls get out with that transparency thing

I could tell you basically anything you want to know about SC2. I played it at Blizzcon and keep up to date with everything blues post. What do you want Blizzard to release? Every single tiny adjustment they make in their internal testing? Like Karune said, we know basically everything about the multiplayer. Since they've been giving us so much info we want more but there's nothing left to give! We know it all and now we're biting the hand that has fed us.

I think i didnt make my point. First of all, i dont like "free endorsing", i dont like "they are doing it well because they are blizzard". Learn to not care about who are they but about what they do and how they do it. Im not saying u think it this way, im just saying that sometimes it appears this way. Since it's been two years that the game is announced and that we see videos where it appears playable and in a good state of developement (sry for bad english), i really dont understand what a whole team of dozens of ppl that work almost every single day is doing on a game that already looks fine like that. The game looks fine... all this wait and not even a date, not even a YEAR, it's not justified and must not be justified. (long) time ago they said sc2 will whip in 2009... dustin browder just said "unless something crazy happens, the beta is going to happen this year". THIS is crazy. Im ok with the habit "it's ready when it's ready" and "we won't tell a date until we are absolutely sure of it" but im not ok with it if you carry it on for a decade.

Blizzard didn't have to give us BR or frequent Q&A batches, but they still do. you usally don't get that much info on the game. But they still should have realesed the info about starcraft in WWI08 instead of WWI07 or update the starcraft2 website more...

Don’t know about you guys, but I’m getting pretty frustrated about not knowing any dates after 2 years. This whole “when it’s ready” bullshit is getting old.

I can understand some anger that is in the community and i am included in this group. Karune and his "it will come soon" thing really is boring now. The game was announced 2007 and now we don´t even have a beta date not to speak of release date. StsrCraft celebrates 11 years so what do we get? Nothing except for april fools joke. Still i belive the game will be awsome but i am a bit angered by all this dragged out development process.
