Glynnis Won’t Return as Kerrigan In StarCraft II

Posted 25th Feb 2009 05:22 AM by Medievaldragon

This is a very sad news to hear. Glynnis Talken confirmed to SCLegacy that she won't reprise her role as Kerrigan. And not for lack of interest. Some time ago, Glynnis told me she was interested in voicing Kerrigan in StarCraft II.

Robert Clotworthy had told me in our interview some time ago that he would also love to reprise his role as Jim Raynor. However, as reported last November Blizzard contacted several agencies in search of candidates to audition for Kerrigan and Jim Raynor roles -- clearly dispatching the former voice actors despite the wish of many fans of welcoming Glynnis and Robert back into the fold.

New actors may be hired and probably be somewhat good at the roles, but Glynnis and Robert can never be replaced. They are unique. They gave life to the characters not just with their voice, but with their passion, humor and convincing performance. I will personally feel a sense of loss when playing the game.

Minor Update!
It seems a StarcraftWire.net visitor have also brought this discussion to Battle.net. Feel free to pitch in there as well!

Clarification:
Since this is turning in to a little bit of a debate, we need to clarify a few things:
- While age can change voices, Glynnis' and Robert's have not in this particular case.
- They are not turned down for changed voices, but because for what voices they already HAVE.
- Glynnis already did a little SC2 Kerrigan voice acting for the BlizzCon 2008 cinematic.
- They were budget voice actors back in SC1, and have not even been approached, so they can not have given a huge number.
- If you have an opinion, it will either be that you like/dislike one or both of them, and how important it is for you to have that voice (or a new one) in StarCraft 2.

OMG!!!It’s a terrible news…I love Glynnis’s voice as Kerrigan. I know Jimmy gets older in the game, so Robert may not be the best choice but now Glynnis too? I just don’t understand….

Can it be they just both die at the first scene of sc2? =o)

I must concur. This is horrible news indeed. Both Raynor’s and Kerrigan’s original voices meant a lot to me when playing the game, and I am very disappointed to see them change. They even used her for the mini-trailers etc at BlizzCon 2007/2008…

Why?!

Didnt they use Kerrigans original voice in the 1 minute cinematic from the intro of SC2 last Blizzcon? In 2008. Then im as confused as you are. Why use her voice just a second in the cinematic. Maybe they just wanna fool us and surprise us when they give out the game :)

Yes, they did. I don't know why they didn't keep her on though, but they also didn't keep on that 1 minute cinematic Jim Raynor either (not Clotworthy)

Very strange. The fans are happy with the old voice actors, and the actors are available and wish to reprise their roles, yet Blizzard want new actors?

Maybe both of the actors seen the popularity of the first SC and decided they want 2Xmore money this time around and a hotel suite while recording? I believe there is a good reason why Blizzard won’t rehire them and it’s not just to annoy fans.

@ Mizantrop

Metzen actually SAID he was unhappy with Clotworthy in SC1, but they took what they could get their hands on. Even if they want more money, they have still not even been approached!

I actually like it when Metzen himself does Raynor. It suits the drunker, grumpier, older Raynor well.

that was taken off of sc legacy.

anyway she will be missed. =/

I don’t understand the logic behind this. They are clearly both good voice actors so it can’t be their skill to perform that’s in question. Is it something to do with the nature of their voices not being right for how the characters are to appear in SC2?

Am I the only one that think they weren't that good? KERRIGAN: Captain Raynor, I've finished scouting out the area, and-you pig! RAYNOR: What? I haven't even said anything to you yet! KERRIGAN: Yeah, but you we're thinking it. This dialogue is one of the worst acted dialogues in SC1 (although it's funny). I always thought Raynor and Kerrigan were somewhat "passive" when speaking. Not passionless like Mengsk, which makes his character (and voice actor) unforgettable. Or over zealous like Tassadar, voiced by Michael Gough which can make even one of the most annoying characters in a Blizzard game (Cain from Diablo) unique (not the golden type) and likable.

No, I think others agree with you, but many people use lots of arguments besides that. Their opinions are not as easy to ignore, but stupid arguments are. Having said that, I disagree with you, I like it.

As a voice actor and sound designer in the business, I do understand why blizzard did not go with them; because they are now in such high demand by fans, they can use that to get a bigger salary (this is a business, don’t forget that) and blizzard is taking a different course can save them money. Though they are not exactly poor, it is considered money saving. Which is why many of their own employees voice in the game, to save that extra dollar.

I myself didn’t enjoy Robert Clotworthy’s performance as raynor. Glynnis was okay. I’m looking forward for what new actors step up in their place. I just hope it is voice actors and not some movie star…

Well, that does make sense Caruu.

Well, the point of the matter is that they were not even asked to see if they wanted huge sums for the game or not. You are likely right in most cases, but here there was not even a thought to check if they could get them for a reasonable price.

Yeah but it is more of a precaution than anything. If it were up to us, they would get back to their roles. Cos I honestly hate when they change stuff around (Arthas and nerzhul) I just hope they put paul eiding in it and I'm a happy guy. He was the adviser for the protoss and Aldaris. Who knows, blizzard is infamous on bringing dead characters back to life, so Aldaris might return. But En Taro Tassadar!

if blizzard were actually motivated by money, the game would be released by now. the change is voice acting was simply a style thing.

I always hoped they would bring Aldaris back, he deffinatly had the best voice in SC1 in my opinion. His last speech when Tassadar was going for the overmind was awesome :)

I don’t get it. I really think they should have hired her. It’s important for the sense of continuity. Didn’t they get Arthas father voice actor in Wrath of Lich King trailer? I thought It was smart. It’s attention to details that distinguished Blizzard from other companies. I’m really bummed that they ditched her.
