Mini-Q&A #3 Banelings, Battle Reports and Warp In

Posted 16th Mar 2009 11:49 PM by Leord

Our dear CM Karune has just unleashed his third little mini-Q&A session in the last month or so, and covered some good ground in terms of responses on questions...

Now, this post has continuously been updated the last two hours, and we even got a few answers that we asked ourselves from StarcraftWire.net! These "mini-QA-batches" seem to be larger than regular ones! I have my theories behind this new behaviour, and I will take the time to write it all down, soon... For now, enjoy a "mini"-batch from Karune on Battle.net:

Since you're doing your blues-rounds =)

Source: http://www.starcraftwire.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1842

1.) D3 will apparently not support LAN. SC1 is more focused as a LAN game, will SC2 support LAN? (Leord – StarcraftWire.net)

2.) Is it official that Clotworthy and Glynnis-Talken are definitely NOT coming back in StarCraft 2, and do you have any comments to the thousands of fans that wanted them back for a second round? (Romanov77 – StarcraftWire.net)

3.) Will there be supported mouse control support in StarEdit 2? The reason would be to create FPS-style maps. (Klear – StarcraftWire.net)

4.) Does the Colossus deal damage based on size? An Ultralisk or Thor would be hit by a larger portion of the AoE damage than a Zergling or Marine. (Kknewkles – StarcraftWire.net

5.) Could it be possible for a map to have a functionality that would let people join or leave mid-game, making a game potentially persistent with the right triggers? (Leord – StarcraftWire.net)

4) I don't believe so- those targets would still take the same amount of damage per volley, but I'll let you know if that isn't true.

5) A lot is possible in the map editor, and much has been done with the War3 editor that we definitely didn't intend it to do too... we'll see in time.

Sorry those are the only 2 I can answer at the moment smile

Yep, that's questions from StarcraftWire! Unfortunately only 1/5 is really answered... Considering the LAN question was not answered, and the fact that Diablo 3 dev team have answered it, does that mean that we won't see LAN mode in StarCraft 2? Regardless, it might be possible to re-enter games, as Karune seems optimistic. Perhaps that reply can be applied to the mouse control as well, allowing FPS games in StarCraft 2 custom maps - properly!

Are Banelings going to be visible?

Because the only way i see them to be effective is if theyre cloaked.

Banelings are visible and still very effective. When they are grouped with Zerglings, it is hard to focus fire several Banelings approaching at the same time. Even one Baneling getting through can be devastating to mass Marine armies or groups of Zealots.

Burrowed Banelings are also like mines, deadly when used as an ambush on unsuspecting forces.

But Banelings splash damage doesn't hurt your own units right?

No, it doesn't hurt your own units.

[About Battle Reports]

Combined with your first statement that the report would be out soon after the game was selected, you've had us all expecting it any day now for more than two weeks.

So, what's going on? Are we all misinterpreting what you said? Or did you guys choose a game and work on a report, then change some mechanics and decide to wait on the report?

It will still be the same Battle Report game as Dustin described, but there is no guarantee on the release date specifically because our production processes can sometimes be lengthy, and the final product will also be distributed in all of our supported languages as well. In the next Battle Report, we plan to also include a transcribed version of the game.

If a protoss player decides to warp in a pylon at the bottom of a cliff and you have a flyer(or any unit for that matter) giving you vision of the high ground can you warp in units on the cliff? I assume if pylon power can travel upwards, it will be possible.

Yes, with vision you'll be able to warp in on the cliff. Sight is a hugely important factor in timed strategies where players rush to a unit that can traverse cliffs.

woah...how many pages back you goin' man?

Pretty far considering I can't find anything to answer at the moment...

Karune, about Comic contest

When are the february winners going to be realeased? Thanks.

Should be released shortly, they have been doing votes on the winners this week. Q&A Batch 50 will be out this week, and will talk a bit about the replay system.

The top winner for each region gets a pair of StarCraft II beta keys each month. Those who do not win, will still have their submissions considered for following months as well.

Teir 1 Unit in Late Game

Zerglings are always useful in late game due to their speed and ability to surround enemies. Banelings too are especially useful against both Zealots and Marines, even with their upgrades, and thus will always be useful to counter them. Additionally, Banelings are always useful in raiding, which should be done throughout the entirety of a StarCraft II game.

Also, a revival of an old thread that Cydra used to cater to:

Blizzard Quote: (Source)
1) So overseers cannot generate creep?
2) Is there any speed upgrade for the overlord without upgraded to overseer?
3) Does the generate creep ability generate a permanent spot of creep or only until the overlord is given a different command?
4) What happens if you generate creep then start a Nydus worm then stop generating creep while the nydus worm is constructing?

1) Correct.
2) Yes, there is currently a speed upgrade for the Overlord at the Lair. Overseers also have a speed upgrade option in the Lair, and will no longer automatically have the speed upgrade.
3) It will continuously generate creep up to a maximum radius, until the ability is turned off. The Overlord cannot move while the ability is active.
4) The Nydus Worm will still pop up, but will begin to take damage over time when there is no creep.

How about Overlord transportation? Is it still in game and is it an upgrade? So many questions raspberry

The Lair/Hive currently have 3 upgrades:
1) Additional Overseer Speed
2) Additional Overlord Speed and allows them to transport
3) Razor Plague (AoE cast ability for the Queen, which is also able to be controlled for a duration by the Zerg player)

Has the Dark Pylon been changed at all since the Q&A?

Only changes are balance changes, which will still continue to change. Otherwise besides that, the abilities are still the same.

Hallucination still does not work on Carriers, Motherships, Dark Templars, an Observers. I'll have to get back to ya on the lore side smile maybe get them to post up a website update on that.

The Nullifier's weapon hits one target at a time, doing damage as long as the enemy is targeted.

Blizzard Quote: (Source)
I have been wondering, what happens when a unit gets targeted by a force field.

They do not get pushed outside of the force field. If a unit is underneath a force field, when it exits the force field's radius, it will not be able to pass through the force field again until it dissipates. Units under the force field can fire out as well as be hit by enemy fire.

If players can leave and join mid-game, that would be something. It wouldn’t be that hard to program, really. If p1 leaves, the units go to neutral. When someone joins, the p1’s neutral units go to the newly joined player. It’s as simple as that.

Yeah, that’s what I thought. I think it has more to do with the joining lobby etc for the game.

I think that becomes a problem of X player leaving because he’s losing and Y player joining to replace player X. It might be feasible in a custom game where the new player can start out new without disadvantages (similar to joining a CS or CoD server).

Also, I recall someone or something mentioning that beta signups being available right after the 2nd battle report. Can someone confirm this?
