NetEase Counts Down to Starcraft II Beta?

Posted 30th Apr 2009 01:04 PM by Leord

We're hesitant to bring up another countdown again, but the source is a lot more impressive this time!

Chinese gaming sites are reporting that NetEase, the distributor that signed deals with Blizzard to distribute StarCraft II and World of WarCraft in China, has re-launched their countdown page, which was previously used for the countdown to release of its self-developed 3D MMORPG Qian Nv You Hun.

The text translated to English literary says:

Countdown to 144 hours 45 minutes 47 seconds

About NetEase - About - Contact - Recruitment Information - Customer Service - Relevant laws - Advertising Services - Netease game recruitment

NetEase Inc. All rights reserved © 1997-2009

This countdown is going to run out on sixth of May, 12am UK time or sixth of May, 7pm Chinese time. [Small update: It seems the script is not set to a specific international time, it's set to sixth of May 12am around the globe, so it's obviously only meant for Chinese visitors, and we can assume it's the Chinese 12 am time it refers to. It would mean 7pm in the UK on the same date.]

Since this is from a major company, that also have several ties to Blizzard we can expect something to happen then. It would seem likely that it could be something related to Blizzard, since the Chinese fansites already are preparing for beta, and according to them, on behalf of the Blizzard representatives over there. Most major sites now host some sort of pre-beta activity that's meant to give away StarCraft II beta keys.

The graphic itself is also VERY similar to the one used by Blizzard before the announcement of Diablo III in WWI 2008 Paris, even down to how some of the "blocks" are formed.

Some Chinese gaming sites first speculated that this countdown by NetEase be Diablo III, but after several fans pointed out it looks more like a Protoss face, they changed it over to StarCraft II. We know it can't logically be a countdown for the StarCraft II release since it's not even in beta yet, but considering all the other beta-related events on the the Chinese fansites, could it be the Chinese beta starting?

Keep up to date on the beta with the StarCraft II Beta Centre, and find out any ways you as a Westerner can get a StarCraft II Beta Key. We will update this continuously until May 6th, with the help of our Chinese expert, Kuangtu.

Don't forget that this could just be another announcement of a game made within NetEase itself, despite evidence to the contrary!

Small Update

Our News Editor and Chinese specialist has finally woken up, and have posted his opinion on this StarCraft II beta count down reported by Chinese game sites:
163 (also known as NetEase), like to use an abbreviation of a game to name its second-level domain. For example, wow.163.com, it's the website for World of WarCraft. In this domain name, xyx.163.com, "xyx" could be an abbreviation of many Chinese character combinations, but none of them are close to StarCraft. The background music is not StarCraft style at all, not even close. NetEase wouldn't suddenly open a site with a countdown for StarCraft II when they didn't update their official Chinese StarCraft 2 site Starcraft2.com.cn for more than a year! Also it's unlikely for them to know the release date for the StarCraft 2 beta. Even if they do know they won't dare to open up a countdown so hastily.
Kuangtu has some very good points here. URL, music and lack of official web page updates are all reasons to believe this is something other than StarCraft 2. However, the obscure title abbreviation could be specifically chosen to be different than any current game. If Kuangtu says he doesn't thin kit's the thing, then I would be inclined to believe him. He has an excellent sense of Chinese gaming industry, and at least a lot better than mine. We'll just have to see come Wednesday next week!

Yes, and that's why we all must look on this as objectively as possible. Could very well just be another random MMO from NetEase, with an inspired countdown from Diablo 3.

nice find!
i think it is possible and i am kinda 50/50 about that.
but it sounds kinda logically to me that netease, considering their latest deals with blizz, would be the first to get informed by blizz about the internal beta start annoucment date.
hope to see some change in the countdown picture like the D3 one had. this would drive the comm into a crazy hype :-D

This puts us roughly into next Wed, May 6th…so either way we’ll discover its true meaning soon. I prefer these shorter teasers which gives us less time to speculate =]

Some battle.net members are obviously not impressed:

Still, it’s Battle.net, I’m not expecting balanced opinions…

Leord, link to the counter on the NetEase website or something? Where did you get the image or the info? I am from Starcraft-esp press team and we are looking for it.

It could be those ones who were excited from the past countdown timers and have become jaded already. I resent the anger that comes out of the Battle.net forums directed at the news gathering you do. We're the ones who have to make the ultimate decision whether we believe it or not. Bringing us the information is just beneficial for everyone. I think it's interesting news, and even if it turns out to be another non-beta announcement, it is still great to have something -anything- to look forward to.

This is 100% logic. Blizzard would not have a beta countdown on their site. And ive also seen some pictures of protoss with a scar on the eye.

SO therefore they make it here.
