NVIDIA 196.75 Drivers Kills StarCraft 2

Posted 4th Mar 2010 10:20 PM by Medievaldragon

Update - 2010-03-18: There are now new drivers that are safe.

Update - 11:00pm EST: I reached NVIDIA's PR for an official statement and they replied within the hour. Read their response and feedback from many gamers here.

Original post - 5:20pm EST: I want to warn all of our visitors who are participating in the StarCraft II Beta to refrain from installing the latest NVIDIA WHQL 196.75 WHQL-certified drivers. If you already installed it, uninstall it and downgrade to the previous version. Yeah, it's that serious. Many players are reporting their PCs or graphic card have died. It also affects all Blizzard games, so heed the call and safe your hardware's life.

According to Blizzard's Tech Support the latest NVIDIA drivers are causing fan control to not work correctly and causes massive overheat. StarCraft II Beta might kill your PC or card literally. A fix is already in the works. Stay tuned for further updates.

Blizzard Quote:
We're getting reports where users are getting intermittent low FPS after installing these drivers. It seems that it is related to the fan control included in these drivers not working correctly and is causing the video card to overheat on 3D applications. This will affect Warcraft 3, World of Warcraft and StarCraft 2 Beta. Please uninstall the drivers and revert back to the older ones.

Welcome. Thought fans should know about this issue.  I burned two ATI Radeon 9800 Pro a few years ago. I know the pain. Don’t want anyone having that experience.

What are “drivers”? All the talk about the fans makes me think it’s a hardware, but the talk of installing it makes me think it’s a software.

How do I find out what driver I’m using?

Depends on what type of computer you have. Did you buy a computer from Dell, HP, Sony, Gateway, etc.? Or did you assembled the computer yourself? What Operating System do you use? Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Mac OS?

My computer is custom built. My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate, 32-bit.

Ok that makes things easier. Since you custom built it, what's the video card model attached to it? If there's no graphic card attached to your PCI or AGP slot, (i.e. graphics is built-in into the motherboard), say the motherboard model.

Well, I didn't personally custom build it. I can't find the PCI or AGP slots, I'll bet their on the insides of my comp. I looked through one of the openings and saw the word Intel, maybe that's important. I guess it doesn't matter what driver I'm using because I have no recollection of installing NVIDIA WHQL 196.75 unless it's an automatic update or something. I think I'm safe. Thanks anyway Medievaldragon.

No need to open up your computer case. The easiest way to tell what graphics card you have to open up your battle.net account and look at the specifications it collected from you (in the beta profile settings). Other than that, you can get your specs by going to "Run" in windows and typing 'dxdiag'. That will give you a lot of information about your hardware and drivers.

Press the key between CTRL and Alt (the one with the Windows logo) plus the R-key.

Type this: DxDiag

This will open a window with all your computer hardware, OS, and graphic software data.

Press the Enter key and safe the file into your desktop as a text file. There you will find your computer specs and that’s how we can figure out who the manufacturer is to find the drivers you need to update your graphic card.

Alright, the ‘run dxdiag’ thing worked easily. I am curious what information is relevent to my drivers. It did say this:

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM v1.1)

Considering you have Windows 7 32-bit and running a GeForce 8400GS this is the driver you should use:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_winvista_32bit_196.21_whql.html

Go to START—> Control Panels—> Uninstall a program panel

Search for NVidia drivers in the list. Click uninstall Nvidia display drivers or whatever they are called.

Then install the drivers I linked you. Restart.  that will solve a lot of any problems you might have while playing. You have never installed drivers before.

Update: ugh, that Microsoft Corporation - WDDM v1.1 on the side sounded odd—I think I know what that means. Whoever sold you this rig did never installed an Nvidia driver ... you won’t see any NVIDIA display drivers then, lol.

Check it anyway. if you see none listed just install the new drivers straight and reboot.
