RUMOUR: Diablo III Before StarCraft II?

Posted 14th Sep 2008 07:21 PM by Leord

This is just so silly that we did not plan on reporting on it at all. However, since everyone else is reporting on it we will at least make a note out of it… The basic thing is that Battleforums reported that a “source” had told them StarCraft II development had reached a halt, and all effort was being put into Diablo III, which would also be released first.

[Starcraft 2] is still being worked on, but only by a minuscule amount of people compared to what [Blizzard] put on the Diablo 3 team.

Now, this is BS. We have been told that there are around 40 people working actively on SCII, like it was a year ago, and the DIII team is about the same size. There are another hundred arguments for that it should be BS as well, but no point wasting your time… Don’t believe everything you read, and if in doubt, ask StarCraftWire.net wink

I’m actually a tad disappointed in Battleforums for doing such a tasteless stunt. I’m sure it will have given them a lot of hits but was it worth it for tarnishing their reputation? This is NOT something we would have called news worthy, and we throw away similar “news items” all the time. Had it not been for the hype, we would not have reported on it at all.

I don’t believe Blizzard will release DIII sooner than SCII, even if there are more people working on DIII. Cause IMHO I believe that the SCII fan base is bigger than that of DIII, thanks to the almost entire Korean population. If they’re smart, which they probably are, they’ll release SCII mid/end 2009 and DIII by the end of 2010. You don’t want to release them too soon after each other, cause there are plenty of people who will want to play both games, including myself, but both take a long time to master!

I agree, this is a bit of a far fetch and it’s unlikely that Diablo III will be released anywhere near StarCraft II.  Not just because of the time spent on development but, as Zidane mentioned, the two games could impact on each other’s sales.

Diablo III can be release before Starcraft II even with less people and with less time. Why? Because Starcraft is a very high competitive multiple game and require iterative balancing. When you change a unit in any way the whole thing has be rebalance. Having 3 races that build, fight and move differently is a hell harder to balance than having 1 zillion weapons fit all fit in a database for speed/damage/level balancing. Moreover Diablo III will have imbalance like Diablo 2 had, they will be fix later. I didn’t say that Starcraft II will be perfectly balanced but the importance is a lot more important since they want tournament and reach hard core RTS gamer.

I’d just like to point out that the original unpatched Starcraft was greatly unbalanced, a fleet of twelve battlecruisers practically slaughtered any balanced force for example, and this was retail not beta or such. It took many years before Starcraft became a largely balanced game. It wasn’t a great tournament game, but it advanced and became better, and had a local cult of followers who helped immortalise the game as well as having at its core a solid gameplay experience.

Bad Rumour! Bad Bad Rumour! Go to your room!

Starcraft 2 will be out before D3, I’m pretty confident in that.  D3 also has a semblance of balance, not to mention item stats, character stats, levels, skills, monsters (hp, damage, etc), difficulty levels, item drops, magic affix levels/rarity, etc.  All these aspects take time to iron out, not unlike the balancing of units in Starcraft.  It’s these aspects that make D2 incredibly addictive, and D3 will need to match this.

Considering the time that SC2 has been in development (or at least announced) as opposed to D3, I strongly believe it’s Blizzard’s plan to release SC2 before D2.
