Neocrisis have posted a brief video comparing StarCraft to Dawn of War, primarily showing similarities in appearance between the games:
Update:
It seems like the player embedded here as well as the one at Neocrisis are having problem. You can view the video directly from here instead.
Update 2:
I changed the video to YouTube, as many people seem to have problem with that GT video.
There actually was a legal dispute over it. Blizzard were not found infringing. Unsure if Tyranids really were release before Zerg were conceptualized for SC1. Remember, this is one year after Warcraft 2... 1996.
Tyranids seem to be circa 1993. Still, quite a niche thing, and not at all a given that Metzen had been involved with it at the time of SC2 lore writing.
If anyting, Starcraft is “inspired” by Dawn of war, which is a Games Workshop franchise that existed before the development of SC.
Well, I wouldn’t say that. I would say it’s inspired by Warhammer 40k, among other influences. SC is a melting pot of a dozen different styles meshed together. The predominant WH40K inspiration is ofc the Space Marine / Marine likeness.
Well its just how you look at it I guess. Early iterations of Starcraft 1 got labelled: Warcraft in Space which suggests something quite different

The Thor reminds me more of Microsoft’s MechWarrior franchise than the DoW mech. But thats just me

Well or numerous Manga franchises? =)
Also, want to point out that the youtube video, if you click through, has like an amazingly funny conversation between me and DoW fanboys =)
