StarCraft Beta in 2009

Posted 23rd Oct 2008 02:00 PM by Leord

During the BlizzCon 2008 show, a StarCraft II Q&A session was held with the long haired and rockin' Chris Sigaty and Samwise Didier. Among others, OMGStarCraft.com was there, and have edited up an interesting summary of the session.

Among the answers they give, we are informed on what changed with Blizzard after the Activision merger (free Guitar Hero boxes to all employees), the reason for the trilogy (if you had not already heard about that lot already) and a confirmation that the StarCraft Beta will start in 2009!

Other interesting facts include that the internal company Alpha started just a few weeks before BlizzCon, and this is interesting as it seems that Blizzard have done away with the classical "Friends & Family Alpha" that they used to do. Since Blizzard now is some 2700 man strong, they don't need to bring in "outsiders" like they used to. Friends and family of the people in higher positions probably get to play this Alpha though. Still, this is not a sure bet. WoW: Wrath of the Lich King had a Friend & Family Alpha, and so could StarCraft 2 have, at a later stage. Still, the amount of leaks from the F&F Alpha of WotLK might be the very reason SC2 won't see one. Friends and Family will likely instead be invited to the beta.

Worth noting is also that Sigaty specifically mentions "Battle.net 2 beta" as part of the beta.

My friend Scott on OMG StarCraft also promised us more information in upcoming posts. Looking forward to it!

It’s nice to hear that an alpha has already started amongst the developers, so I’m definitely hoping for an early beta next year - perhaps February or March.

While watching the video, I’d just like to say that the Hellions are starting to grow on me.

I hope so Elly, I hope so. Usually the game itself will follow three or four months after the beta was started, so it looks hopeful.

Well, Activision thought it was 2009, and I have a link for that somewhere =P

Look at News for it wink

I’m actually looking through one of our interviews. There might be some info hidden there, in one dev’s slip-up.

If beta is in 2009, it just makes me the happier to wanna get into the Beta.  While I am hard at work at MS, things are starting to ease up ‘just’ a bit.  We’ve just finished the game we’ve been working on, finished the Title Update and now just working on DLC for the game.  Progress is going pretty well all in all.

You know, im sick of everyone complaining when they dont exactly know why they made it a trilogy. they made it a trilogy because that’s their only way of making Starcraft 2 an exciting game. Starcraft 2 is going to be a big hit knowing blizzard and plus blizzard wouldnt just ruin their good reputation by making starcraft2 a trilogy alot of money they even said making more profits wasnt why the made it a trilogy. people just dont know how to trust Blizzard. I just cant wait for "Starcraft2 trilogy" to come out smile

I agree Jsj39, the Trilogy was a really good move on their part, and the idea of Three really MAJOR story campaigns to go through really picks up the immersion for those who are major fans of the story of Starcraft 1.  The way Blizzard is going about this, making it so large, so packed, and really adding so many story elements is brilliant smile
