Study StarCraft For College

Posted 27th Jan 2009 02:15 PM by Leord

Yeah, you read it right, and no, I am NOT kidding!

Students in UC - Berkeley can take up StarCraft studies for college credits. Well, at least it's not as far out as some University courses, but it's still amazing and interesting. The only thing the students could want in addition to this is a Blizzard sponsorship and playing around in StarCraft II!

Read all about this marvellously educating college course (that WILL give you college credits)!

Course Description:
UC Berkeley students with an interest in real-time strategy games and the competitive gaming landscape are encouraged to participate in this class.

This course will go in-depth in the theory of how war is conducted within the confines of the game Starcraft. There will be lecture on various aspects of the game, from the viewpoint of pure theory to the more computational aspects of how exactly battles are conducted. Calculus and Differential Equations are highly recommended for full understanding of the course. Furthermore, the class will take the theoretical into the practical world by analyzing games and replays to reinforce decision-making skills and advanced Starcraft theory.

Class will start with lecture and usually include a special discussion topic having to do with the day’s lecture to inspire new and original thought. At the end of lecture, there may be time to analyze student-submitted replays to illustrate a point or to improve analysis. Homework will be assigned at the end of each class and is due at the beginning of each lecture.

Course Learning Objectives and Goals:
What may look like complex topics are just ways we want you to think more deeply about the game to derive a greater satisfaction from playing. Furthermore, this understanding should have applications in real life, to further synthesize new information from limited inferences. The primary goal is for students to learn, enjoy the art of competitive StarCraft, and have fun. Overall, students will be applying critical thinking, quick decision-making, and game theory skills throughout the sessions. Students will also learn what to look for in a replay or game to learn most effectively.

Some of the prerequisites for the course is that students "should be familiar with all units and some basic StarCraft strategy". Anyone interested in the course needs to enter the class with "an open and analytic mind". This is besides the Calculus and Differential Equations recommended in the description above. Oh, and you need to have StarCraft: Brood War, doh!

An interesting point for us in the StarCraft Community with all of this is all the final projects that students will make. Mayhap a lot of new, interesting points of view will emerge by the end of this course?

Final Project:
There will be a final project where students will present and explain their contribution to the Starcraft Community. This may take the form of an essay detailing new theory or calculations, or an in-depth analysis of a significant game. Whichever final project is chosen will be displayed or published on a public forum for peer criticism.

We have had an interview with the course facilitator, and we'll be posting an update on this shortly!

Update:

The interview article about the StarCraft College course is now released!

This is great! I will apply for UC Berkeley now! Hopefully they still have that course this fall…lol

PS:
=/ I couldn’t find anything on UC’s website about this. Tried course search by building, instructor’s name, time, date, room. Nothing matches. And isn’t this a young guy?

As for the course facilitator, we’ll get into details with that soon enough! =)

Howdy.

I thought about running this, but then I looked a bit deeper.

This is Engrish, at best :
http://michaelo.phswebs.com/BerkeleyStarcraft/Hw_3.pdf

It is not written by a UC Berkley Professor. It is not written by a person that is accustomed to writing material that is read by other people.

Probably a hoax.

Cheers

Sorry to prove you wrong, but this is actually a course. Had you done your research a bit more thoroughly, you would have discovered that this indeed is not taught by a professor. It is a student-led, professor-approved course. It's merely hype that makes everyone think that this is a professor-taught course. The website itself is legit, as is the facebook group, http://www.decal.org/home/faq.php#what-is-decal So, by all means, feel free to dismiss it, although I'd appreciate if you would run this ACCURATELY. Every other site seems to skim over the fact that it is a student-taught course. I'm a current student at UCB, so feel free to question me about this. That, and I'm a friend of the course facilitator, so I'm rather certain that this is NOT a hoax.

You are right. I contacted UC Berkeley (actually before responding here), and they have confirmed later that this is indeed a legitimate student-led course. Cheers

@ goldy496: While I already knew it was real, since I have contacted the facilitator, and Berkeley, it's great you provided that link. Hopefully I'll be able to post the interview today =)

To goldy496: Very timely reply. I forwarded this news to few Chinese SC Forums as soon as I finished translating it. Most people didn't believe it's real. Your link to decal.org explains a lot, thanks. I don't know anyone from UCB to prove its facticity, but I don't think anyone would put up a site like that to be hoax. So, I'm looking foward to see more news about this from Leord. =)

I can’t believe you guys think my class is a hoax. When the webcast comes out, will all the speculation finally end?

I’m actually surprised by how exceedingly far this news has traveled. I’ve been getting messages in languages I can’t even recognize.

my webmaster is still learning, and he’s trying new things. Please lighten up on him. you can reach the new website at http://www.berkeleystarcraft.com, if we haven’t exceeded our bandwidth yet.

goldy496, I’m curious, who are you?

@ Alan

Welcome to StarCraftWire! Very happy to see you posting here. To be fair, there has been numerous comments on many pages that have mentioned the course as a hoax. Your course has been “debunked” on a few sites as well!

I can’t access the site:

A communication error occurred: “Operation timed out”

So, I guess you are either reaching your bandwidth limit, or you surpassed it! =)
