The Fourth Race Coming in StarCraft 2 Expansion?

Posted 29th Aug 2008 03:33 PM by Leord

When I talked to the different StarCraft 2 developers at Blizzard back in March, I did actually get the little piece of information that they had been making concept art for a Fourth Race, but that it never came as far as ingame models. They had played with the thought, but felt that the energy would be more well spent in perfecting the three classic races of the Protoss, Terran and Zerg.

On this topic, Frank Pearce told VG247 that there might be a Fourth StarCraft II race added “in the event” of an expansion. Well, the chances of an expansion are good, I’d say…

Blizzard Quote: (Source)
We don’t have the resources or time to add a fourth race to the launch of StarCraft II, but I’m sure in the event that we decide to do an expansion set it’s a feature that’ll come up for discussion.

We talked about the possibility of a fourth race early on, but we felt like we had a finite amount of great ideas and wanted to make sure we focused all the cool, best ideas on the existing three races rather than diluting those ideas across four races.

Well, since they were talking about it, but never came as far as 3D models, I wonder what this Fourth Race is?...

On an unrelated note that isn’t worth its own news item, TVG has an interview with Frank as well that they will release later. The little teaser snippet they released includes nothing new though:

  • They also “hope” it will be released before 2011 (obviously).
  • Probably not a console game of SC2 (obviously).

Well here is my ten cents.

As far as I can see there are two possibilities and three scenarios. The first is pure and simple the Xel’Naga, however the greater majority of their race proved to be no match for the, pre Zergling, Hydralisk, Mutalisk, Guardian, Ultralisk, etc…, Zerg; I’m thinking that this is not the case. The Second is the Hybrid race which has two possible story lines. The first is that the Hybrid race, while a dream come true for the Xel’Naga, is not not only a personal triumph but a tool for retribution. In this case we have the Hybrids backed by Xel’Naga technology. The other story line is what Freelancer already proposed that Duran is the Overmind reincarnated. In this case the Overmind is simply fulfilling it’s ultimate plan to incorporate the Protoss into the swarm.

The Protoss had better hope that it is the Overmind reincarnated. If it is the Xel’Naga pulling the strings they are going to be a giant Axe to grind with both the Zerg destruction of the world ship and the ultimate failure of the Protoss, I think the second of the two is a more interesting story line.
