Coverage WWI 2008 >> List of New Zerg Changes
There has been people asking about the Changeling, a new Zerg unit that is created by Overseers from using energy, which can transform itself to look like a unit of opposing team for a short period of time. Dustin Browder (Cavez) explains further in a post on Battle.net:

| He’s not making it up.=) Here’s how it works.
Overseers can create a Changeling by spending energy. The Changeling is a small unstable Zerg creature with timed life. When he gets near an enemy structure or unit he will change shape into the correct basic unit type and color to match that player. So if you get near a Blue Barracks you become a Blue Marine. If you get near a Red Stalker you become a Red Zealot, etc. Enemy players cannot control the Changeling. It’s still owned and controled by the Zerg player who created it. It is very vulnerable and can be killed by a single hit from just about anything. The Changeling cannot fight. He is just a shapeshifter, when he looks like a Marine that gun in his hand isn’t “real.” You can see that something is a Changeling by mousing over the unit, by trying (and failing) to drag select or by selecting the unit and seeing the name and portrait. What it does for the game: In live games it is pretty difficult to keep on top of the “Changeling Problem” if an enemy Zerg player is trying to sneak into your base. However when you do catch them it feels pretty good. It’s something we have been trying for a few weeks and we thought we would include it in the WWI build to see what people thought. |

This is just one of the MANY Zerg Changes that has come at WWI.
I kind of like this idea actually however I think Dustin overstates how difficult it might be to find them. Wouldn’t a player simply try and highlight all the Marines near his base and spot the one that isn’t highlighted? Or notice that one of “your” Zerglings is running towards your base, knowing full well you never sent any out in the first place.
It might keep some players paranoid though ![]()
I know Dustin mentioned “enemy structure or unit”, but I’m interested if it’ll also work with allies as well. It’ll technically be just like Hallucination.
Pretty sure it won’t work with ally units, but I never tried that. Yeah, it’s not that hard to notice, if you constantly keep looking, but you need to do that on all your bases/expansions with regularity.
The main thing here isn’t so much a game mechanic as attention of the player. It’s probably mostly about the fact that units of that player won’t shoot that unit automatically.
