Zerg Changes Compilation

Coverage WWI 2008 >> List of New Zerg Changes

From the grounds of the Blizzard World Wide Invitational in Paris we have compiled for you a list of Zerg changes that have been revealed to us during the event:

New Base Defences

As some might already know the Swarm Clutches of the Hive Queen have been removed from the game to make room for the original model in which defensive structures where Drone mutations. These defensive structures are called Spine Crawler and Spore Crawler. It can uproot and move around (as long as it stays on the creep), but can not be transported through the Nydus Worm. While uprooted, they cannot attack and are much more vulnerable to damage. They both have a 100 mineral cost (in addition to the Drone) and take 30 sec to mutate into the chosen defensive (or offensive) structures.

Wondering what happened to your favorite unit? View the full compilation here.

An ungodly amount of changes to the Zerg, perhaps one of the more interesting is the Mutated Larvae.  I really liking the idea behind this new unit and sincerely hope it doesn’t get removed due to balance.

It’s also nice to see the task of building the base’s defense returned to the Drone.  My main concern with this originally being left to the Queen was that a player might not have been able to get a static defense fast enough to stop a Zealot rush.

The Swarm spawning from destroyed buildings was a surprise idea.  Chalk up another unit for the Zerg to make use of in the map editor!

Think the "Swarm" is a placeholder unit, really. Or placeholder name. Seems odd to call a single unit "Swarm". Perhaps they will be called "Swarm Spawn" or something.

Like the Mutated Larva, as we reported, it was called Morphalisk first. I think I like that name more tbh!
