The difference between WarCraft II and StarCraft in terms of gameplay was huge. Instead of two mirrored races, there was three completely unique ones, with almost no head-to-head equal units. Many similar, and to some extend did many units fulfill the same tasks across the races, but most didn’t. One of the few things that were among the closest match was the issue of transportation, as all three races used the same mechanic. In StarCraft II, the developers have thought about this again, and diversified the transportation system between the races even more.
The Zerg Overlords are no longer capable of either transporting other units or detection (the latter subject touching the general topic of detection in StarCraft II), and the former useless Nydus Canals have bloomed to life (literary!). The Overlords have turned in to creep-generating blimps, and the Nydus Canals have unrooted and started moving in the form of Nydus Worms. The new transportation system for the Zerg is an evolution of the old Canals, made into a whole Nydus Warren Network, where every worm or Nydus Warren structure will lead to the same space. A unit can instantly enter this Warren, and instantly exit. The only problem is the global space of 8 slots in the warren, hindering the Zerg controller from moving its entire army without impunity. Units must be shuffled in and out in the two different ends simultaneously.
The Worm can dig itself under any terrain, and appear where he is least expected. It is an interesting mechanic, and really separates the Zerg from the Terran and Protoss.
