<i>I've only posted about the beta on a few select sites at first to get things started.</i><br />

I started this project, a StarCraft-themed game, from scratch about a month ago and I'm personally impressed with myself on how much I've completed thus far. I have made so much progress that it now warrants the need for a public beta test of the game. The purpose of this beta stage is to help find any bugs and add any last minute fundamental features, but more importantly to hear your opinions on the units and to <b>address any balancing</b> that is necessary.<br />

<i>All concept &amp; design work, web design, and programming are done by me alone. The unit artwork is provided by my older brother.</i><br />

 --- What is Strife? --- <br />
<br />
For those that do not know what <u>Strife</u> is yet, it is a <b>free to play</b> browser-based game where players match a team of units against another player's team. The idea behind the game was inspired behind the famous MyBrute.com, but takes a different approach. Players can swap in and out units of a team, upgrade an individual units' equipment, and even manage multiple teams. These teams can be composed of units from any race in the <u>SC franchise</u>. For example, you could pit a team of zerglings against a 2 unit team of a marine and a zealot. The best part is the game only requires 5-10 minutes a day to play at the very least, though the more dedicated players will spend maybe double or triple that.<br />

<br />
At this stage of the game I am very <b>open to any ideas</b> to make it more interesting and intuitive. While the game does have elements of randomization and luck to it does maintain a mixture of player controlled aspects so as to keep things fresh. Remember, this is the beta stage and has, for the most part, all of the functions working. The final version of the game will have fully animated battles that will unfold before your eyes, just like MyBrute.com, complete with illustrated unit artwork.<br />

Here is what else to expect to be added in the coming weeks during the beta..<br />
 - Multiple daily tournaments.<br />
 - Auction house (both teams/units).<br />
 - More units, and their accompanying classes.<br />
 - Damage types (normal/concussive/explosive).<br />
 - Splash damage.<br />

And what is being withheld until the final version..<br />
 - Fully animated battles that can be watched.<br />
 - Seasons (3 months long) to keep the standings fresh.<br />

The flat that is on fire is on the opposite side of a courtyard (which is tiny, though) and so there is no danger to our flat. I hope. We can't leave though, and everything is going to smell a lot for a long time.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div>I found <a href="http://www.starcraft2forum.org/forums/showthread.php?p=320094#post320094" target="_blank">this very interesting translated post</a> of some of the action at IGROMIR 2009 in Russia and thought it'd be interesting for some of the troops here to read.<br />
<br />
Some key points of interest that I picked up:<br />
<br />
<b>General</b>:<ul><li>Mana upgrades now affect the starting mana of a unit, rather than the maximum mana?  So once upgraded a HT can pop out and cast a storm straight off the bat or something</li>
<li>Even with auto-mine in, there's still very heavy macro at the base to keep using MULE, the Obelisk and Queens Inject Larvae.  It sounds like it gets quite annoying late game to ensure all bases are using these abilities to not slip behind in resource count.</li>
<li>Computer opponents type GG at the end.  Amusing</li>
<li>Even now the Blizzard Reps aren't able to give out some system reqs.</li>
</ul><br />
<b>Terran</b>:<ul><li>Thors are transportable via the Medivac, and infact this guy actually loves the unit, claiming it's the bread and butter of the Terran army.  Apparently the transporting takes place by the Medivac lifting the Thor up underneath it.  What impact this has on movement speed of the Medivac, and what other units it can carry at that time, is unknown.</li>
<li>Siege tanks got a pretty negative review.  It seems he feels that they've been replaced by Thors and Nukes</li>
<li>Speaking of nukes, they appear to be much easier to acquire than the original, and as the author mentions are a viable substitute to the traditional siege on the enemy base.  Costs are 100 mins and 100 gas.</li>
<li>The author also speaks highly of the Raven, specifically about the turrets it is capable of building, which I find very interesting to finally hear some action with them.  Apparently the turrets are quite powerful, and a group of Ravens could make efficient work of destroying a base it seems.  A turret can apparently take on a zealot 1 to 1.</li>
<li> Infantry vs Zerg is still the way to go it seems, although with the upgrades they have (and the medivac as well) it apparently is a difficult thing to do on a 1 base setup.  The author advises a mech opening.</li>
<li>Yet another negative review of Hellion as well, being clunky and awkward.  I hope Blizzard addresses the unit before release.</li>
<li>Quote: &quot;If you've got mass Factories and you run up against an air army, go ahead and write GG&quot;.  No great Ground to Air support apparently, but this statement confuses me abit as he states that Thors don't apparently attack air, when I am of the impression that they do.</li>
</ul><br />
<b>Protoss</b>:<ul><li>Yet another mention for a Stalker + Colossus combo.  It seems my initial assessment of the Colossus being a relatively weak unit might be incorrect, and I hope that's true.  Also the Colossus is supposed to be used to allow the Stalkers to Blink their way up cliffs and stuff</li>
<li>To quote the author: &quot;Stalkers, in the early-game, destroy basically everything, and in later-game serve as excellent defenses against Mutas, Reapers, Hellion drops, and so on. When they get Blink, adequately countering them becomes pretty much impossible.&quot;  As a protoss player, that's riveting stuff</li>
<li>The author also had a chance to play around with Force Field of the Disruptor, which is an ability that I haven't heard much of.  It's apparently quite useful with Stalker combo, allowing the creation of temporary walls for the ranged units.</li>
<li>Teching to DT's is apparently abit more inconvenient in SC2 than it was in SC1</li>
<li>Quote: &quot;They say that Colossi and Warp Prisms are simply unstoppable: unload, WHOOSH, load; though I haven't tried it for myself&quot;.  WHOOSH indeed.  Looking forward to it.</li>
<li>Mothership is slower than a floating Barracks.  Apparently combined with a Obelisk it can keep units in the black hole statis for quite long (only 25 mana cost).  Unsure if the Mothership can warp to a phase prism.  Also cloaking comes with package, much like an Arbiter.  All good confirmations for me.</li>
<li>Quote: &quot;Warp Prism, or should I say Portable Base Where Your Opponent's Main Should Be&quot;.  I love it already.</li>
</ul><br />
<b>Zerg</b>:<ul><li>Inject Larvae is, as the author put it, a BEAST.  I keep hearing this and I'd be lying if I said I was abit worried about it.  Apparently in another article I read a Queen with Inject Larvae + 1 hatch can generate units faster than a 2 hatch base, and costs alot cheaper, therefore making the need to go 2 Hatch at the start a redundant activity.  Also, there's no cooldown and only 25 mana cost.</li>
<li>Speaking of the Queen, it seems that a single Queen can now inject larvae to multiple hatcheries.  This is probably common knowledge for some people but I thought it was limited to a single hatch or something.  Perhaps it's my memory that is wrong</li>
<li>The Queen can also heal up sunkens that are being attacked, so cue the zerg equivilent of SCV's repairing bunkers during an assault</li>
<li>Roaches need Lair tech now, and their regeneration needs Hive tech?  Seems like quite a change from their original design.</li>
<li>Lurkers require Hive tech as well, something I was blissfully unaware until this moment</li>
<li>The author had a pretty good chance to play around with Infestors which I found very interesting, having never really seen the unit in play.  Apparently they spawn 4 infested marines that attack at range, for a very low mana cost.  Of course the Infestor itself also travels underground so apparently harassment is top notch.  Also apparently it's infest ability and the infested marines one too are both automatically acquired, no research needed</li>
<li>Ultralisks rule the battlefield, it seems</li>
<li>Nydus Worm seems to be more like a drop ship.  You place the thing down, build an exit and load the units.  The units don't appear automatically at the end but rather you need to unload them.  The author goes on to say it's very useful for defending all your expansions, which I gather means you can build multiple exists or at least a network of some sort, and have a singular defensive force</li>
<li>Muta stack is gone?  I thought it was brought back, but apparently not</li>
<li>Overlords dropping creep - remote sunkens, preventing expansions/buildings, hiding key buildings in corners of the maps.  Interesting scenarios.</li>
<li>Apparently overseers are the units that produce the goo like creatures which can mimic another unit?  Supposed to be used for intel gathering.</li>
<li>Corruptors are the units that morph into Broodlord (previously Swarm Guardian?).  Apparently the Broodlord doesn't have an attack per se, but rather when it does attack is creates broodlings which have 30 HP, low damage and low duration, but as a result can summon an infinite number of them.  </li>

All in all, it was a very interesting read and only serves to make me more excited about the game being released (or even entering Beta), and encourage everyone to read it when they get an opportunity.  I couldn't see a link to the original post but if someone has it then post it here to for reference sake.</div>
