Broodling walking in StarCraft.
Before the Brood War, the Queens produced globs of spores which they launched at their targets. If any organic matter was touched by these spores, the spores would "fertilize" the unwilling target which would then, through a near instant metabolization, spawn a pair of Broodlings and die from the ordeal. The spores were capable of entering through even armored hulls of vehicles or personal body armor to reach their target biological host.

Due to the quickened metabolization and short incubation period, these creatures were very small and very weak. They would, however, immediately start attacking nearby enemies of the Swarm until killed, or until their very short life span was at its end.

From the end of the Brood War and up to now, the Queen evolved into the Hive Queen, and lost her Broodling capabilities in order to lay eggs and defend the Hive Cluster instead. However, there has been more evolutionary changes, and the acidic bombardment of the Swarm Guardian now uses a similar gene strain of spores to create Broodlings upon impact. These spores are given even lesser time than the old Queen gave her Broodlings, and so they are even more frail and short lived. Instead they can be produced in much greater numbers, and more rapidly, wasting valuable firepower of the enemies of the Swarm.

In some cases these Broodlings can be misconceived to be "relatives" of Infested Terrans or Infested Protoss, as the Queen used to be able to infest Terran Command Centers, but they are a parasitic life form conceived through spore clusters and a super-accelerated metabolizated incubation rather than a mutation of the existing gene pool into a controlled mutant life form.

Game Unit

The Broodling is a small, notorious Zerg creature, whose primary use is to annoy opponents. Even in great numbers, they will not live long enough or do enough damage to be of any particular use, but as disruption to the opposing players, they are useful, as they allow other Zerg breeds to mow their enemies down.

StarCraft II Unit

The StarCraft II Broodling is created from the Swarm Guardian's shots rather than the Queen, and will not automatically kill its host creature. Each shot will produce two Broodlings, who run around and hit the nearest target. When destroying a Zerg building, a number of these Broodlings will also emerge to attack the attackers.

This new Broodling is weaker and can't really accomplish anything on its own. They are easily killed and have a short life span even without being attacked. However, they move a lot faster than the version in StarCraft I, and can over time even kill off units such as Marines.

The primary use of this Broodling is to waste shots from the opponent, and some minor "wear an tear" on their forces. Great use against groups of Siege Tanks, where it's likely the tanks will receive friendly fire when trying to shoot Broodlings.

* The Energy is slowly ticking down. When it reaches 0 the Broodling dies, regardless of current health.
While the ability to create a Broodling is slightly more effective in StarCraft (killing the target unit), it's also more cumbersome, and not often used. The Queen needs to spend Energy in order to use the ability, and it requires a lot of Micro Management to use, compared to a similarly effective ability, like Psionic Storm.
