Colossus

From The StarCraft 2 Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

The Colossus is like an alien machine that walked out of the War of the Worlds movie. This massive unit that can walk over terrain like it wasn't even there. Add to it their powerful beam weapon, and it makes for one heck of a base assault unit.

A Protoss vs Zerg battle showing the new thermal lasers for the Colossus.

The towering Colossus is a Protoss robot design dating back to the bloody conflicts of the Kalath Intercession. It strides across the battlefield on four tall, slender legs which give it an extremely high level of mobility. The great height of the machine allows it to step up and down cliffs and other steep elevations with little difficulty, and gives it a dominating field of fire.

The Colossus is unusual for the fact that it was created purely as a war machine. Most Protoss robots are created for industrial or resource-gathering purposes. Even the much-feared Reaver is at its core a mobile manufacturing unit re-tasked to the creation of Scarab drones for long-range bombardment.

The mass slaughter unleashed on the Kalathi by roving Colossi appalled the Protoss.

At the time, the Conclave outlawed the manufacture of Colossi, and existing machines were deactivated before being sealed away in distant asteroids and uninhabited moons. Centuries later the war against the Zerg has brought forth these engines of destruction to do battle once more.

[edit] StarCraft II Colossus

In Starcraft II, the Colossus has replaced the role of the Reaver for worker raids. It is capable of climbing level 1 ledges to reach higher ground.

Because of the Colossus's height it will also be able to provide a line of sight for other smaller ranged attackers to attack to a high ground.

The Colossus will be susceptible to Anti Air defenses, such as that from the Terran Missile Turrets, as well as both ground and air attacks. The Colossus will also be vulnerable to the Corruptor's infestation attack.

Although considered a "large" unit, the Colossus will be transportable[1] by the Warp Prism because it will first be changed into energy before being "loaded".

When hit with the Nullifier's Anti-Gravity ability, the Colossus will be lifted into the air and become entirely an air unit for the duration. While suspended in the air it will not be able to attack and will be vulnerable to enemy anti-air fire.

The Colossi will not be hit for double damage from units that can hit both air and ground.

[edit] Development

In February 2008, the Colossus's Thermal Lance attack was changed from a double sliding beam to an array of multiple beams in an effort to give a more interesting AoE template for players to micro against. This was changed again for the WWI '08 build to a single beam that quickly slides from right-to-left.

The Colossus also originally had a Null-Flux Generator upgrade that enhanced the defensive qualities of their shields. It was to be researched from the Robotics Support Bay, however it was missing from the 2008 WWI build.

Karune had also confirmed in late March 2009 that the Colossus and Reaper can no longer walk over smaller buildings such as Supply Depots or certain skills like the Force Field.

In May 2009, Cavez confirmed that the Colossus has an attack that strikes in a line relative to its position. The attack was implemented to encourage micro because of the increased importance of positioning.
