The Crucio is the Dominion update of the immensely popular but aging Arclite Siege Tank. The Arclite was renowned throughout the Confederacy for its devastating firepower and stalwart emplacement/advance tactics. Originally designed to serve as a "final defense" security cannon, the siege tank adopted a two-stage configuration in its final form: a mobile assault mode and a deployed siege mode that brought its massive shock cannon to bear. The immense flexibility of an armored battle tank that could advance and then deploy itself as heavy artillery was a huge success, and the design was widely copied.
Although the Arclite was supremely effective in the artillery role, it suffered some shortcomings as a battle tank. It was a superb defensive unit, but in offensive operations it required substantial support to get to a forward emplacement. Enemies would often make strenuous efforts to get close to a deployed siege tank battery so they could exploit its "deadzone." If they were successful, this tactic usually meant destruction for the Arclites because even in assault mode the machines were too undergunned and poorly armored to fight off a determined close-range assault.
The Crucio has been designed for increased survivability with an enlarged, reinforced turret and hull. The new turret layout also features an upgraded assault-mode armament package so that the Crucio can fend for itself more successfully in an open battlefield. Force deployment costs for the Crucio have increased over the older Arclite, but the increased versatility of the powerful new siege tank more than compensates for the additional expense.

The Crucio Siege Tank is the clear direct descendant of the same concepts and ideas that made the Arclite Siege Tank so powerful in the days of the Confederacy. The same ability to deploy into a stationary artillery emplacement for greater firepower has been retained, and it has lost none of its effectiveness over its predecessor even in these trying times for the Terran race. Even though it is in the early days for such a new technology, the Crucio Siege Tank looks to be a worthy successor and to be a strong element of any major land based conflict.
Typical usage on the battlefield lends itself to defensive roles in your base or for besieging/raiding an enemy base. The Siege Tank can be deploy in Siege Mode for added damage against almost anything, at the cost of being unable to move until returned to the Mobile Assault Mode.
Much of the same strategies with the Arclite can also be used with the Crucio. They make excellent siege weapons for destroying the enemy defenses but will still need the same protection against air attackers or those with melee. Combined with the increased cost, it is almost important that the Siege Tank be escorted with Marines, Marauders or Vikings to defend against these weaknesses.
The Siege Tank receives a bonus in damage when attacking armored units.

Once in Siege Mode, the Tank's range and damage is significantly increased at the cost of any mobility. They will begin to fire on any enemy unit that walks within their range with an added bonus of dealing splash damage to those surrounding the target as well. This splash damage affects both friendly and hostile units.
A Siege Tank with Siege Mode is the perfect unit to help break an opponents defenses. Their extended range and increased damage usually makes short work of any Photon Cannons, Bunkers or Sunken Colonies allowing the remaining army easier access to the base to finish the job.
They also do well on the defensive, since keeping a few Siege Tanks behind a row of Bunkers and Supply Depots will ensure they hit the enemy first without fear of retaliation.
While in Siege Mode it is important to protect the Tank from melee attackers, such as the Zealot. Once an attacker gets close enough to the Tank it will be unable to return fire. It is a good idea to keep some support units, such as Marines, Vultures or Goliaths, close to the tank to help fend off would-be attackers and keep them at a respectable distance. These defenders can also repel hostile air units, since the Siege Tank is also unable to attack air.
Siege Tanks are more effective against large units, such as Dragoons and Ultralisks, due to their Explosive Attack (50% damage to Small Units 75% damage to Medium Units, and full damage to Large units).

In late October 2008 for the Blizzcon build, Siege Mode was moved from the Tech Lab to the Armory in an apparent effort to force Tank Mode to be used more and bump Siege Mode to mid to late game.
