The Dark Templar are powerful psionic warriors of the Nerazim tribe who were exiled from Aiur approximately 1000 years before the Zerg invasion. The banishment came from the refusal to join the Khala, the philosophy and communal mind link shared by all Protoss of Aiur.

The Protoss Conclave ordered Adun to destroy these "heretics". However, instead of destroying them, Adun taught them how to use their psionic powers, specifically how to bend light around themselves to make them invisible. He hoped that they would use this to hide themselves, and that someday they would see the wisdom of following Khala.

Unfortunately, the experimenting with their psionic capabilities accidentally released a terrible psionic storm that spread over the whole of Aiur. This alerted the Protoss of their presence, who termed them the Dark Templar, and triggered a great civil war across Aiur. After years of fighting, the Dark Templar were exiled from Aiur. For the next 1000 years, the fate of the Dark Templar remained unknown to the Protoss, until the invasion of the Zerg forced them together. Now, the Protoss of Aiur and the Dark Templar remain in a tentative alliance, working together against the Zerg.

Driven by individuality and a thirst for knowledge, Dark Templar have developed along a very different path than the carefully regulated mainstream of Protoss society. They remain willful and often fiercely independent, with their closest allegiance being first to clannish warrior bands and then to the Nerazim, the great tribe to which all dark templar belong.

By their nature the Nerazim are a diverse group of freethinkers motivated by their regard for one another and tribal bonds rather than abstract notions of authority. Different clans take great pains to distinguish themselves through variations in weapons, armor, markings, and dress. For example, the famed hunters of the Zer'atai dress in the bones of slain Zerg; the Boros are known for their blank-faced helms and heavy armor; and the Lenassa wear distinctive cloth wrappings and bear wickedly curved warp blades.

Regardless of clan, reputation and personal responsibility are paramount in the eyes of any Nerazim: individuals must always be accountable for their actions. As a result, deeds rather than words act as the Dark Templar's guide. Individual clans can be prone to feuding and rivalry, but they are quick to band together against a common threat, such as that presented by the Zerg. Judging the total power of the Nerazim is almost impossible, for most are nomadic folk scattered across dozens of star systems in small ships and hidden enclaves. It's quite possible that their combined strength is enormous.

[edit] StarCraft II Dark Templar

In StarCraft II, there won't be one single unit for the Dark Templar. Dustin Browder promised StarCraftWire.net at BlizzCon that there was plans for three Dark Templar models, randomly choosen from the Zer'atai (2-edge scythe), Boros (no art available yet) and Lenassa (classical SC1 DT). On 2009-01-08 Blizzard started a poll [1] to choose between the Lenassa and Zer'atai Dark Templars. Whether we'll get 1, 2 or 3 Dark Templars in multiplayer is yet to be decided.
