Not much is known about the lore behind the Sentry yet, but it must be relatively revolutionizing, since this is the first time we can see a fully robotic unit using advanced psionic abilities. The Protoss must have perfected their synthetic production of psionic energies when creating the Sentry, and made them relatively easy to produce as well.

It probably works very similar to the Warp Prism, which uses a psionic manufacturing processes, to create a Robotic Mind whose programming is built into the molecules of an advanced crystal lattice. This "crystal computer" is able to manipulate matter and energy with a precision no ordinary organic mind could comprehend.

Game Unit

The Sentry is a new Protoss addition to the StarCraft universe for StarCraft II. It is a caster unit with relatively weak offensive abilities.

StarCraft II

The Sentry is an early support caster with several useful abilities to aid the Protoss in combat.

Force Field is a simple spell that creates an impassible and invincible hexagonal globe at the target area or unit. This globe lasts for 15 seconds and can be used to create artificial choke points or walls to stop or separate the enemy army. Ranged units, such as the Stalker and Immortal can also use these walls to safely attack melee opponents without fear of reprisals. They can also be combined with the Stalkers Blink to teleport over a wall of Force Fields and kite enemy units such as the Zergling.

The final ability, Hallucination, has been changed slightly for the Sentry to make it more useful early game and provide more strategic options for the caster. Instead of simply creating two duplicates of the target unit (like in the original StarCraft), the Sentry will be able to manually select which units to "create" even if the technology to warp them to the battlefield is not yet available. This allows the Sentry to create a duplicate army of hallucinations that can distract the enemy or mix in with the current army to give the illusion of a larger force.

Abilities
  • Force Field Image:Energy_SC1.png50. Creates a force field that lasts 15 seconds and impedes movement of ground units.
  • Guardian Shield Image:Energy_SC1.png75. Creates a range 4 aura that reduces incoming ranged damage to friendly units by 2. Lasts 15 seconds.
  • Hallucination. Creates hallucinations that cannot deal damage. Lasts 60 seconds. Has to be researched at Cybernetics Core.

Upgrades

The Sentry will benefit from the following upgrades.

Development

The Sentry was originally called the "Stasis Orb" but was renamed in mid January 2008 to Sentry as part of the Q&A Batch 26. It also started out as a Tier 1 unit but was quickly moved to Tier 1.5 around the same time to compensate for several new abilities.

True to its new name the Sentry received Null Void as part of the Q&A Batch 27, an ability that caused all other skills in its area of effect to become unusable. Null Void also had the added bonus of revealing nearby cloaked or burrowed units. This was removed for the WWI 2008 build.

Anti Gravity, which was received in February 08, was also removed from the Sentry and given to the Phoenix for the Blizzcon 2008 build. This has been replaced with a tweaked version of Hallucination.

The Sentry also have a tweaked attack animation as evident in the latest screenshots and videos. The old animation had the force beam originating from an orb on the tail of the Sentry while the latest version shows the beam starting from the head.

Finally, in mid February 2009 it was confirmed by Cydra that the Sentry has dropped back to two skills, losing the Molecular Displacement ability. Molecular Displacement was an offensive skill that sent a psionic projectile to the target that bounced between units of the same type for up to a maximum of 10 hits. It was particularly useful at taking out groups of the same units with low HP, or weakening an incoming force by targeting key units.

Most recently, the Sentry has seen yet another name change, starting out as the Stasis Orb before changing to the Nullifier, then to Disruptor and then finally to the Sentry.
