A pack of Dragoons offering support to several Zealots.
Veteran Protoss warriors who have been crippled or mortally wounded in combat can volunteer to continue their service to the Conclave by being transplanted into Dragoon exoskeletons.

Within a short time, the fallen warriors learn to control the movements of the large, mechanical walker as naturally as if they were within their former bodies. Dragoons provide essential supporting fire for the Zealot legions by launching bolts of anti-particles sheathed in a psychically charged field. These disintegration bolts are effective against both air and ground targets.

[edit] Game Unit

The Dragoon is one of the few Protoss ground units in StarCraft I that can attack air and is best used as support.

[edit] StarCraft II Dragoon

The Dragoon will not appear in the open multiplayer of StarCraft II, having been replaced by the Immortal and Stalker.

[edit] StarCraft I Dragoon

Dragoons are the bread and butter unit for any Protoss force and make excellent support units or mobile base defenders. They have a slower rate of fire when compared to the Zealot but their range usually allows them to hit and destroy incoming enemies quicker or chase down those that are retreating. When up against the Zerg it is usually best to escort Dragoons with a group of Zealots to absorb fire and act as a buffer against incoming Zerglings, that would otherwise destroy the Dragoons with fewer casualties.

[edit] Trivia

The Dark Templar were inspired by the original Dragoons, which has led to the construction of the Stalker for StarCraft II.

Karune has confirmed as part of the Q&A Batch 9 that, even though the Dragoon will not feature in the open multiplayer of StarCraft II, it will be accessible in the map editor.
