[edit] StarCraft 2 Building

The Factory in StarCraft 2 is more or less the same as in the original StarCraft game. The main difference is that the building produces different kinds of mechanical units, with the Siege Tank being an exception, but still produces the same advanced type of units. It is now also able to use two kinds of add-ons for the Factory; the Tech Lab and the Reactor. Their modular design allows them to be attached to Barracks, Factories and Starports. This allows the production to double or allow access to more advanced units.

The Factory can create or use add-ons to increase availability of units to produce, or speed of production.

[edit] StarCraft 1 Building

The classic StarCraft Factory is a straight-forward building that enables the production of more advanced mechanical units such as the Vulture, Siege Tank and Goliath. It also has an optional Machine Shop upgrade to enhance vehicles' offensive weapons and speed.

[edit] Development

The Terrans train most of their mechanical units in the Factory. This is vital to the Terran player as it produces the more powerful units known to the Terrans. In the original StarCraft the Factory produced Vultures, Siege Tanks and Goliaths, however, in StarCraft II this has changed completely. Both the Vulture and Goliath have been dropped from the game and the Factory in StarCraft II now produces Hellions, Siege Tanks and Thors. It used to be able to produce Cobras and Vikings, but the Cobra has since been dropped from StarCraft II due to balance issues and the Viking has been moved from the Factory to the Starport, in order to keep similar kind of units at their corresponding buildings.

Also, the Machine Shop add-on in the original StarCraft that allowed the production of Siege Tanks, has been dropped from StarCraft II and the Factory now supports two kinds of new add-ons; the Tech Lab and Reactor. Both allowing production rate to increase and/or make new units available. These add-ons can be borrowed from the Barracks and Starports.
