The Hatchery is the command post equivalent for the Zerg. It is the basic Zerg building, which is mutated from a drone. It generates larva that mutate into the zerg units.

The Hatchery is at the center of any Zerg Base. It serves many main functions that are vital to the Zerg. It is a drop-point in which Minerals and Vespene Gas can be deposited in, from there it distributes the minerals to the swarm, whether it be a unit, a building, or an upgrade. It also produces creep. After it is hatched, it will immediately begin producing life-providing creep for the swarm, on which buildings can be mutated, and units will gain a small speed upgrade.

It also generates larva, which can be mutated into many of the Zerg units. The larva themselves are very well armored, as to survive any small raids, and when mutated, in egg form, gain even more armor bonuses. The hatchery also contains the genetic code for upgrades that effect the swarm.

Giving birth to a Queen is also a good supplement for the Hatchery, as the Queen can spawn additional Larva with her skills, and spread the creep with Creep Tumors.

A Hatchery can evolve and be upgraded to a Lair after making a Spawning Pool, letting the Zerg advance their genetic pool further, in order to make improvements to the Hive Cluster.

Game Building

StarCraft 2 Building

This is of course the most basic building. If you do not have a Hatchery, you will be revealed shortly after losing your last one. A Hatchery is required to let your Drones mutate into any other building, bar Extractors. However, if you have some higher tech buildings around, certain ones can be made.

Abilities

This requires the Queen. It targets the hatchery, producing 4 larva aside from the 3 produced from the hatchery itself. The hatchery, after being targeted, will create a green sac, which will then burst, leaving the additional 4 larva. This is useful in times when a few extra units are needed fast.

Upgrades

This will evolve the Hatchery into the Lair, enabling more upgrades, units, and buildings. The Lair enables most Tier 2 Technology

Production

Development

The Hatchery as such, and the principle behind it is the same as in StarCraft I. The new feature is really for the Hatchery to be able to give birth to a Queen, which is nothing like the version in StarCraft I.

Using the Queen, the Hatchery can also increase larvae production, by using the Queens special abilities on it.
