A pack of Hellions ambush a group of Zerglings on New Folsom.
The Hellion is another new addition to the Terran forces, which acts as a combination of the old Firebat and Vulture in one. It's a fast, land-based vehicle which uses fire throwers to deal AoE line damage to units. These little lethal "beach buggies" will torch large number of packed units, such as Zerglings to toast in no-time, and might even have the time to run away unharmed!

[edit] Game Unit

The Hellion is a very mobile quad buggy with an overhead mounted flamethrower, whose primary role is support for the main Terran army.

[edit] StarCraft II Unit

The fast movement speed of the Hellion allows it to quickly chase down retreating opponents, or to readily escape an unfavorable situation. Unlike the Vulture, the Hellion cannot attack while on the move and must stop before the attack can commence.

The mounted flamethrower deals an area of effect in a straight line and is ideal for taking out light armored units, from which the Hellion receives an attack bonus. Combine this with the quick speed and increased range upgrade, and the Hellion can easily perform hit and run tactics on a much slower enemy group.

The Hellion is currently unable to attack air targets.

[edit] Upgrades

[edit] Development

The older Hellion model with one front wheel.
Originally called the Jackal, the Hellion received a name change in early October 2008 at about the same time as the Nighthawk.

The Hellion was originally introduced with a railgun in late February 2008, but this was changed to a flamethrower in early March 2008.

In mid June 2008 the Hellion also received an art upgrade. Earlier models showed a single front wheel whereas the newer has two.

[edit] Trivia

As part of the Blizzcast Episode 6 it was revealed a civilian variation of the Hellion can be seen in the single player campaigns. This variation can include a different paint job and the removal of the overhead flamethrower.
