Hero

From The StarCraft 2 Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Hero units are used in the StarCraft games in order to represent important characters of the story line inside the campaign. These Hero units are often regular units such as a Marine or a Vulture that has a different statistics, portrait, and different voice acting than the original unit, and does not employ any type of "level up" system such as in WarCraft II. They are just generally more resilient and stronger.

Hero Characters

The Hero characters of StarCraft all uses the animation of some original unit of the game. Jim Raynor, for instance is portrayed as Marine, Vulture and Battlecruiser, where the only physical difference between himself and the regular unit are the statistics, portrait and voice. Hero units normally start with all special ability upgrades available for that unit, but can be set to lower in the map editor. It's not possible to make these upgrades inside the game engine though. The regular upgrades (such as "Ranged Attack" or "Zerg Carapace") will affect the Hero unit just like ordinary units.

The most common use of the Hero characters in StarCraft I was to place them as "rescuable" on the map, so that they retained a different colour than other units. This made them easy to separate from the regular units.

Exceptions

The one exception to this rule is Sarah Kerrigan, who not only has a unique Ghost animation, but also a unique Infested Terran one, where the latter even includes a unique combination of abilities compared to the normal unit.

There are also "Hero" units in the game that are exactly the same as the normal units, besides having better statistics, and ability upgrades automatically added. Some of these have unique names, like Gui Montag, while others are supposed to represent a type of unit, like the Hunter Killer, which is an advanced Hydralisk Zerg breed. Not all of these are represented in the Single Player campaigns, but some have been shown in bouns maps released after the game and its expansion.

StarCraft II Hero Characters

StarCraft II Hero characters have not yet been revealed on how they will work. Seeing how Blizzard has created the Tauren Marine just for April 1st, we can probably assume that all Heroes will have their own ingame animations, or modifications that makes them unique. The 3D engine of StarCraft II makes it a lot easier to make minor modifications to units without spending countless hours on the development.
