The High Templar are seasoned, veteran warriors of the Protoss armies that have walked far down the path of Khala. Those who choose to accept the mantle of the High Templar set aside the frenzied rage of the Zealot, and instead use their highly potent Psionic abilities to bolster the warriors of Aiur. The sight of enemy forces being torn apart by a Psionic Storm or wasting their firepower on projected Hallucinations is proof enough of the battlefield superiority that the High Templar can give to the Protoss.

Although High Templar are powerless when it comes to physical attacks, their special abilities -- as well as their potential to sacrifice themselves to form mighty Archons -- make them a threat that cannot be ignored.

Game Unit

The High Templar hasn't changed much since its appearance in StarCraft I, having retained almost all of its abilities including the devastating Psi Storm.

StarCraft II High Templar

The High Templar returns as a mid-to-late game support caster, best used when backed up with other units. If they are left undefended or in the open they can easily be picked off by enemy units, particularly a Ghost using Snipe.

Any combination of two High Templar or Dark Templar can merge to warp in an Archon.

StarCraft I High Templar

The High Templar is a powerful support unit capable of casting the Psionic Storm ability to kill hordes of enemy units. Although not particularly durable or agile, this unit works best when accompanied with other allies, such as Zealots and Dragoons. They are especially useful against enemies that stacked themselves on top of each other, such as Mutalisks.

A common tactic is to load two or three Templar into a Shuttle and sneak behind the enemies defense to storm the workers.

Two High Templar can merge to warp in an Archon.

Development

The High Templar in StarCraft II was first given Hallucination in late October 2007 as part of the Q&A Batch 19 only to have it replaced by Anti Gravity in February 2008 (Q&A Batch 28). It was briefly returned to the High Templar in Q&A Batch 32 in March 2008 before being passed to the Nullifier, and replaced by Phase Shift, for the Blizzcon 2008 build.

In May of 2008 Karune, at one point, had mentioned that the High Templar no longer has a physical attack in the StarCraft II build. This would indicate that the developers had considered giving it an attack to defend itself, possibly similiar to the one used by the hero Tassadar in the original StarCraft I.
