Larva
From The StarCraft 2 Wiki
The Larva is the foundation of the Zerg. It's used to mutate into units, which in turn can mutate into full-blown Zerg structures. Almost all of the Zerg race is derived from the Larva. It has no direct offensive abilities; its use is only for expansion.

The Zerg Larvae are almost direct descendants of the original Zerg insectoids, but have grown in size as well as toughness as they were enhanced by the Xel'Naga experiments. The main reason that the Zerg Larva was interesting for the ancient Xel'Naga was the genetic versatility and psychic sensitivity in such an "under developed" life form.
The Larva of today is maggot-like and contain the genetic code for all other Zerg breeds available in the local gene pool. If a Hive Cluster needs a specific breed of Zerg, it will be ordered by its controller to enter a pupal state and start replicating the DNA of that breed. This mutation is done at an astounding rate compared to procreation of other species, and when the egg hatches, the Zerg creature will be ready to fulfill its duties.
A new Hive Cluster will usually only have the genetic code available for the most basic breeds, such as Drones, but as the Cluster gathers resources and increases in size by letting the Drones mutate into large structures, it can increase the number of genetic structures an individual Larva can mutate into.
Larvae were first found by Terrans in the Koprulu Sector Fringe Worlds in the late 25th century. These worlds were populated by Terran farmers who were relocated by the Confederacy under the cover of a "cholera" epidemic and the specimens of Larva found by the Confederacy were shipped to science facility on Vyctor 5. They were later discovered by the Sons of Korhal years later.
These small insectoid creatures have been changed the least since before the Brood War, and still retain most of their previous attributes. Small and gooey with antennae as well as eyes to navigate, they never wander far away from their Hatchery, and never off of the Creep.

The Larva are produced by a Hatchery, Lair or Hive on certain intervals, but there are never more than three Larvae available at any one producing structure. It is not possible to command the Larva, and they will randomly crawl around near the producing structure. If the creep under a Larva disappears, it will die, as will also happen if a Larva in metamorphosis cancels its mutation.
[edit] StarCraft II Unit
The StarCraft II unit is used for almost every other Zerg breed, comparable to the StarCraft I Larva that is used for ALL Zerg breeds, buildings and evolution.
[edit] Abilities
The Larva's only ability is to mutate into other Zerg breeds. There are different requirements for the different breeds, and some mutate themselves to evolve further. A Larva can mutate into the following units:
- Drone (requires nothing)
- Overlord (requires nothing)
- Zergling x2 (requires Spawning Pool)
- Roach (requires Roach Den)
- Hydralisk (requires Hydralisk Den)
- Nydus Worm (requires Nydus Warren)
- Infestor (requires Nydus Warren)
- Mutalisk (requires Spire)
- Corruptor (requires Spire)
- Ultralisk (requires Ultralisk Cavern)
[edit] Upgrades
There are no upgrades for Larva.
[edit] StarCraft I Unit
The StarCraft I Larva is the foundation for ALL other Zerg units. A Larva can mutate into the following units:
- Drone (requires nothing)
- Overlord (requires nothing)
- Zergling x2 (requires Spawning Pool)
- Hydralisk (requires Hydralisk Den)
- Queen (requires Queen's Nest)
- Defiler (requires Defiler Mound)
- Scourge x2 (requires Spire)
- Mutalisk (requires Spire)
- Ultralisk (requires Ultralisk Cavern)
[edit] Larva Breeds
There are only three known breeds of the Larva:
- Zerg insectoid
- Larva (Brood War)
- Larva (Post Brood War)
- Larva (StarCraft II)
[edit] Trivia
- One of the Christmas Cards by Blizzard includes a little girl getting a Zerg Larva from Kerrigan.
