Marine
From The StarCraft 2 Wiki
The Marines are the main infantry of the Terrans. They are walking, ranged units that excel for usability in numbers, and are often used together with Bunkers in Terran defences.

The CMC-300 Powered Combat Suit worn by marines is effective against small-arms fire and provides them with full life support and NBC (Nuclear/Biological/Chemical) shielding for operation in deep space and other hostile environments. Ballistic alloy combat shields have also been developed in light of experiences during the Brood War, giving an option to toughen up Marines faced with an increasingly lethal battlefield.
If the practice of using resocialized marines has remained controversial, the use of StimPacks is even more of a hot-button subject. These inbuilt chemical delivery systems dose Marines with a powerful mix of synthetic adrenaline, endorphins, and a psychotropic aggression enhancer. Marines on stims benefit from greatly increased speed and reflexes, but are subject to long-term side effects including and not limited to insomnia, weight loss, mania/hypomania, seizures, paranoid hallucinations, internal hemorrhaging, and cerebral deterioration. Nonetheless, both commanders and the Marines themselves stand by the use of stims as essential to their continued survival and effectiveness on the battlefield.
Game Unit
The Marine is very similar in both StarCraft and StarCraft II, and is a unit that can be used throughout any StarCraft Game, used in different ways depending on where the player is in the tech tree. Combining Marines with Medics (SC1) or Medivac Dropships (SC2) will make them a long-lasting, powerful threat. Together with their StimPacks, they will tear holes in any attack force or defensive installment. Marines are generally also used for base defense in Bunkers, located behind Supply Depots, as an extra metal shield to keep invading units at bay.
One good way to kill Marines is to use AoE weapons such as Siege Tanks, Reavers, Psi Storm or Plague. Zerg will often use a Dark Swarm cast by a Defiler or Infestor, then send in Zerglings, as that will render the Marines useless under the cover of the cloud. It is also imperative to defeat the healing units (Medic or Medivac) with micromanagement, as these units will keep the Marines up and running for a longer time.

The StarCraft II Marine is basically the same as the one from StarCraft I, but in addition to previous upgrades and abilities, they can now also get a combat shield to increase their total hit points. Their improved pathing also makes the use of Marines less enervating.
The Marine is good against Marauder, Immortal, and Hydralisk; but weak against Siege Tank and Colossus.

Development
Marines have received a major face lift from the first ever Marine in StarCraft I. The CMC suit has been made to fit smother, and also give the Marine an even stronger pose in the face of his enemies. New weapons that can only be carried by the suit's servos and and even more of a "bad-ass" attitude.
In the game they have also changed from the first StarCraft 2 iteration to the one in Q4 2008. The first model had a lot less polygons, and shinier textures, while the new version is made smoother through polygon increase, and made to look mroe rugged through marks and rust instead, an effect most fans agree is a lot better.
At WWI 2008, Samwise Didier revealed that players will be able to customize the Marine's shoulder decals.
Trivia
- Marines are very similar to the Space Marines of Warhammer 40,000, but are actually quite different. Space Marines carry huge metal armours, not cybernetic enhancements, and they are genetically mutated to survive most atmospheres and gases as well as carrying all those tons of steel. If the two types of Marines met on the field, it's likely the Empire would win, as their universe takes place thousands of years in the future, and they are vastly outnumbering Terrans.
