As conflict escalated to include the Protoss and Zerg, Marine losses became prohibitive. The United Earth Directorate pacification fleet reintroduced the concept of front line units with organic combat Medics back into the Koprulu Sector. Recruitment for Medics drew in mostly women.
The Medics of the United Earth Directorate follow a time-honoured tradition of selflessly marching into combat zones to aid their injured brethren. Armed only with protective shields, their bravery on the battlefield has significantly increased the life expectancy of Marines and other infantry under their care. Medics can even cure various Zerg infestations such as Parasite or Ensnare.
The Medic's primary function is to support combat units by healing Terran infantry units. The Medic's secondary role is to remove harmful and annoying special abilities and occasionally harass the enemy with Optic Flares.

[edit] StarCraft I Medic
The Medic is almost a necessity when preparing a large infantry army due to their auto-heal ability. They can prolong the life of the Marines and Firebats in the group and, in some cases, allow a victory for a battle that would otherwise have been lost.
It is good practice to keep the Medics to the rear of the group, as this allows the use of the "attack-move" formation and keeps the Medics close by for healing.
Although Medics cannot directly attack they can make use of the Optical Flare ability to nullify detectors and otherwise annoy or harass key units of the enemy.
Restoration is also particularly useful in removing negative status effects on friendly units, and has the added advantage of forcing the opposing player to skip certain units and skills knowing full well their effects would be quickly removed.
