A Nanite is a robot or similar piece of technology that can be measured in the size of nanometres (1×10−9 m). Also known as nanorobots, nanobots or nanoids, they all involve nanorobotics. These robots are created in order to affect materials on a cellular (very large and complex nanobots) or even molecular level (very small and simple bots).

Terran Nanites

Infested Terrans

The Terrans deploy nanorobots they call "nanites" which can stop the effect of Zerg infestation in a human. It will keep certain mutated features, but keep the person sentient, and prevent them from succumbing to the will of the Swarm. Even if this holds back a great deal of the mutations, as long as they remain active in the body, it is not certain to keep the person sane. Humans that are infested (Infested Terrans) but kept sentient through nanites are generally referred to as mutates.

Ghosts

It is very likely that the Neural Inhibitors used in Ghosts share a lot of technological traits with nanites, as they are both affecting the body's activity on a cellular level. Any specific relation is unknown, however.

Protoss Nanites

The Protoss are less interested in keeping people infested, and would rather kill the creature than sustain it. They have used another type of nanite based on Protoss technology in their "radical nanotech serum" which was used to revert the infestation of Alexei Stukov.
