A Nuclear Strike requires that a missile is first prepared at the Ghost Academy with the prerequisite of the Factory. This missile is usually an expensive investment, but the results are well worth the initial costs.

To launch a Nuke the Ghost must first "paint" the targeted area for 10 seconds, without moving, to ensure the Nuclear Missile reaches the intended destination. The painted area is highlighted by a small red dot which can be seen and used by the enemy to try and detect and kill the Ghost before the Nuke is fully launched.

A Nuke in StarCraft II.

If the Ghost is told to cancel and move before the Nuke hits, then the Missile will be lost. Once a target has been set, all players will be notified by a "Nuclear Launch Detected" message. Cloaking the Ghost before painting the target will increase the odds of a successful Nuke.

The Nuke will deal 300 damage to all nearby units and 200 additional damage to structures. In addition, it will deal only 10 damage to an Immortal with the Hardened Shields upgrade. Burrowed units receive the full damage from a Nuclear Strike.

StarCraft I Nuclear Strike

The Nuclear Strike in StarCraft I can be called down by a Terran Ghost and works almost identical to that of its StarCraft II counterpart. A Nuke is best used on a target that can not easily escaped, whether trapped by other units or structures or immobilized through another skill - such as Lockdown.

The Nuke deals 500 damage or removes two thirds of the targets total hit points, whichever is greater. The overall damage is reduced the further away a unit is from the center of the blast zone.
