An early shot of the Observer.
The mighty Protoss race knew that knowledge is power. Therefore they have developed the ultimate spy drone called an Observer. It is permanently cloaked, needs no additional energy to maintain this cloak and can observe and record for millennia if needed.

These small drones are employed to survey vast wasteland areas or observe and record battles for study within the Protoss archives. Their complex sensor array leaves little energy for defences, but they can detect any cloaked or concealed enemies with ease. This ability makes observers invaluable auxiliary units on the battlefield.

Observers that are used for deep-space exploration are often deployed without any defensive systems. However, those destined for use in a combat zone are equipped with a micro-cloaking field to hide them from the enemy. The small sensor signature of an observer means that the drone does not have to drain its energy in order to maintain the field over long periods.

[edit] StarCraft II Observer

The Observer returns as part of the Protoss lineup, and remains relatively unchanged as the primary scouting unit. This unit will keep its permanent invisibility as well as its fragile build.

While having no attacks, one of the Observer's main roles is to infiltrate and monitor the enemy to provide valuable re-con for the player - whether it'd be locating a weakness in the enemy's defence or simply finding out what strategy the player is aiming for. The second is to detect any cloaked enemy units and burrowed Zerg creatures, proving that the Observer will remain useful both at home and out on the battlefield.

[edit] StarCraft I Observer

The Observer is a permanently cloaked aerial drone that is primarily used to scout uncharted territory or spy on the enemy. Due to their invisibility they are ideal for keeping watch on key locations and expansion points and are your best source of enemy intelligence.

The downside is that they are incredibly fragile; having the second lowest hit points of the Protoss force behind the Probe. Once detected, they will fall quickly to anti-air attacks if they are not relocated.

[edit] Development

The Observatory requirement for the StarCraft II Observers was removed in mid September '08 to allow these detectors to be built earlier for the Protoss. All Observer related research techs were moved to the Null Circuit.

[edit] Trivia

Observer Quotes when selected multiple times in succession:

  • "I sense a soul in search of answers." (Reference to Adria of the first Diablo)
  • "It sounds like... a huge gargantuan swollen bloated mushroom!" (Reference to Griswold of the first Diablo)
  • "One small step for man, one giant..." *static sound* "Stop poking me!" (Reference to an Orc Grunt in Warcraft)
  • Short Audio playback
  • *German adverstisement for Warcraft II and its expansion set*

The Observer was originally called the Witness in the early StarCraft Alpha.
