The increasing use of command centers in combat zones has also led to the development of standard schematics to upgrade them to a dedicated military role: The planetary fortress with its increased armor and heavy defensive armament.

Of course, everything comes at a price, so the heavy armament the Planetary Fortress comes equipped with has the major drawback of being so massive the structure can't Lift Off, while lacking the required space for advanced scanning and orbital communication the Orbital Command is equipped with.

Since the primary role of this structure is the base's defense, and specifically workers defense, the Fortress' designers did decided to maintain a secure compartment within the heavily armored frame, which allows commanders to offer to a few SCVs a safe spot to take repair from enemy fire.

Game Unit

The Planetary Fortress is one of two upgrades to the Terran Command Center, the other being the Orbital Command.

StarCraft II Unit

The Planetary Fortress deals splash damage with each attack. Though it will continue to produce SCVs normally, the Planetary Fortress can not be downgraded back to a Command Center nor can it lift off like most Terran strutures.

Abilities

The Planetary fortress is designed to be the defensive strong-point of the Terran base. Hence, it lacks any significant ability but the following.

  • Load. Leads nearbay SCVs into Planetary Fortress.

Upgrades

The Planetary Fortress will benefit from the following upgrades, available at the Engineering Bay

Unit Production

Planetary Fortresses retain the Command Center's ability to train SCVs

StarCraft I Unit

There is no Planetary Fortress in the original StarCraft, the closest relative is the Command Center.
