The Purifier is a Tier 2 ground unit for the Protoss that had a special Empowering attack.
StarCraft II Unit
The Purifier is a Protoss ground unit that moved around on a hover board. It is built from the Gateway and has an Empowering attack that grew stronger with the more biological units that it killed. The attack changed visually as it got stronger, gaining up to three beams with each volley.
The Purifier is ideal when used against the Zerg, since all their units are considered biological. Their speed and ability to target both ground and air units also add to their deadliness.

Development
The Purifier was confirmed to have been dropped from the open multiplayer aspect of StarCraft II in late December '07 as part of the Q&A Batch 24. The reasoning behind this was because it was difficult to make it easily readable in big battles when the Purifier had upgraded. Another reason is that this unit was way too targeted against the Zerg, since they have so many low hit point units, as opposed to other factions.
The Purifier was originally known as the Soul Hunter, but it was confirmed to have been renamed a short time after it was removed from the game.
