The Reavers were originally created as mobile factories, these Protoss machines were re-fitted to produce Scarab Drones. After producing a Scarab Drone, the Reaver directs it toward the enemy with devastating results.

Often called the "Ground Carrier", the Reaver is a strange unit that has no direct offensive attack. Instead, it builds and stores tiny, highly explosive drones called Scarabs in its internal manufacturing plant that it uses to defend against and attack its enemies.

Most Protoss robots are created for industrial or resource-gathering purposes. The Reaver was originally a mobile manufacturing unit but it was re-tasked to the creation of Scarab Drones for long-range bombardment in times of war.

A few well placed wave of Scarabs can reduce both troops and buildings to rubble in moments.

[edit] StarCraft II Reaver

The Reaver was seen in some early screenshots but has been confirmed to be removed from the multiplayer aspect of the game, having been replaced by the Colossus.

There are rumors that the Reaver will make an appearance, and may be usable, during the Starcraft II single player campaigns.

[edit] StarCraft I Reaver

The Reaver has an immense potential for causing massive ground damage against both units and structures. Each of the Scarabs deployed from the Reaver explodes with a small radius of splash damage, either heavily damaging or outright killing units within their radius. This makes the Reaver particularly effective against massed groups of enemy ground units - more so if the damage is upgraded at the Robotics Support Bay.

One of the primary roles for the Reaver is to destroy the enemy's line of defense with its impressive attack range. This comes in handy when invading an enemy base fortified with Bunkers, Photon Cannons or Sunken Colonies. The only ground unit with a greater range is the Terran Siege Tank when in Siege Mode.

The Reaver does come with some weaknesses; it is highly susceptible to air attacks, having no way to defend itself and poor mobility to escape such attention. It should be escorted by support units, such as the Dragoon, to reduce this risk.

Another weakness of the Reaver is its slow rate of fire and the slow build time of Scarabs. During the long pauses between the firing of Scarabs, the Reaver is completely open to attacks.

A common tactic is to combine Reavers with Shuttles to sneak behind the enemy lines and attack the workers - killing several with a single Scarab.

[edit] Trivia

  • If a Reaver's Scarab Drone cannot make contact with an enemy's unit or structure within five seconds, either due to pathing or the target has escaped, the Scarab will self-destruct causing no damage.
  • The Reaver was called the Trilobyte in the early Starcraft Alpha build.
