A Shuttle drop on a Terran base.

With the Templar Caste ever increasing in strength and prowess, the Protoss needed a way to ferry these troops to and from the battlefield quickly. So as not to risk valuable warriors as "Ferry Pilots", the Shuttle was piloted by an advanced Robotic Mind, which also allowed the Shuttle to be extremely fast to react to changing combat situations. Until the recent development of the Phase Prism, the Shuttle was a well known and feared component of any Protoss assault force.

The Shuttle has been replaced by the superior Phase Prism in Starcraft II.

[edit] StarCraft I Shuttle

The Shuttle's primary purpose is to transport units from one location to another. To do this, the Shuttle has the limited capacity of 8 Slots with each Protoss units taking 1, 2 or 4 slots accordingly. Any combination of units can be loaded as long as they do not equal more then the 8 count limit. The breakdown of each unit is as follows:

A Shuttle holding a Dragoon, Zealot and High Templar.

When transporting units it is a good idea to escort the Shuttle with some anti-air allies, such as some Dragoons, Scouts and/or Corsairs. If a Shuttle is destroyed while carrying units, all the units inside will die. It is important for the player to try and unload as many units possible if the Shuttle is under attack and close to death. Researching the Gravitic Drive upgrade can assist with a hasty retreat, should the Shuttle encounter any unexpected hostilities.

The Shuttle is very useful in transporting much slower units, such as the Reaver. Reaver drops using Shuttles are a popular tactic and can be devastating to the enemy if executed correctly. It is also handy to keep High Templars and Dark Archons within the Shuttle to protect them from enemy spells, such as the Terran's Irradiate and Zerg's Spawn Broodling.

Another common tactic used when preparing a drop on a well fortified base is to first cast Hallucination on the Shuttles to create some decoys. These duplicated units can be sent first into the enemy's base to distract the enemy and absorb hostile fire.

[edit] Trivia

  • Mind Control is a very useful ability to cast on enemy Shuttles; if they are carrying units then both the Shuttle and all the units it is carrying will be converted under the player's command.
