Because of the crucial role of these structures (in fact Terrans wont be able to train more units than their supply production allows), Supply Depots are heavily armored. If need be, special add-ons are constantly located in orbit where fierce battles occur, which can be quickly called down by an Orbital Command's command to further augment the Supply Depot's supply output capacity.
Game Building
StarCraft II Building
Supply Depots are of course the solid base on which the powerful Terran war machine stands firm. Every Supply Depot provides 8 supplies, thus allowing even more units to be trained. In StarCraft II, however, these fortified buildings can be strategically deployed on the battlefield too.
Abilities
- Lower. Lowers the building, allowing ground units to walk across it.
- Raise. Raises the building, preventing ground units from moving across it.
Upgrades
The Supply Depot can be enhanced through the Building Armor upgrade, available at the Engineering Bay, which upgrades the armor of Terran buildings by 2. In addition to this, the Orbital Command Calldown: Extra Supplies ability can instantly upgrade a Supply Depot to produce 8 additional supplies.
Strategies
Tanks to their ability to Lower and Raise, Supply Depots are often used to block important choke points (like ramps) all over the map, especially those leading to the player own bases. In the very early game this is only performed to prevent enemy worker units from scouting in.
Thanks to their armor, which can be raised by researching the Building Armor upgrade, Supply depots can offer a solid repair from ground attacks to a defensive outpost, like a Bunker or a deployed Siege Tank along with some Marines and Marauders. Some added Missile Turrets, apart from intimidating an air attack, will detect cloaked, burrowed and Hallucinated units, making for impressively powerful and resilient defensive strong-point.
All in all, Supply Depots are much more than the main structure to raise the supply limit. A wise Terran commander should always try to use them in the most convenient way to take control of the battlefield.
StarCraft Building
Increases Supply Points by 8 each (with a maximum of 200), allowing more units to be created.
In this regard, they serve the same purpose as Zerg Overlords and Protoss Pylons.
Unlike most Terran structures, they are incapable of Lifting Off.
Can also be used as a wall, protecting ranged units such as Seige Tanks from melee attackers.
