The Tempest is a high end airship of the Protoss air fleet, capable of producing small drones called Shurikens.

[edit] StarCraft II Unit

The Tempest is a Protoss air unit that has many similarities to the renowned Carrier. It is built from the Stargate and is capable of producing a drone that is deployed to defend the ship. Unlike the Carrier's Interceptor the drone that the Tempest builds is called the Shuriken, a spinning disc-like object that can target and destroy ground units. Due to the melee attack of the Shuriken, it is unable to perform air-to-air strikes against other aircrafts.

The Tempest also receives a buff to its shields when under fire from ground units, but the shields do not activate against enemy air attacks.

This lack of air support, both defense and offense, places the Tempest in a more anti-ground oriented role that requires dedicated anti-air support from ally units - such as the Phoenix.

[edit] Development

The Tempest was seen during the early stages of the StarCraft II development but was quickly removed, having been replaced by the superior Carrier.
