Terrain

From The StarCraft 2 Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Terrain is the base for all WarCraft III and StarCraft/StarCraft II maps. "Terrain" is also used as a mapmaking verb; you can say "that guy terrained this map well", or "you need to terrain this part better".

Terrain comes in a wide variety of appearances, such as StarCraft's "Jungle" tileset that is generally used for all maps taking place on Aiur, or WarCraft III's more specialized tilesets such as "Ashenvale" or "Lordaeron Summer", which can be similar, but still have a lot of different colors, doodads and style.

The main difference between StarCraft and both WarCraft III and StarCraft II is that the latter two can combine different tilesets in one map, while StarCraft maps can only use one tileset the map is saved for. Here is a list of the tilesets that can be used in the different editors:

Warcraft III & The Frozen Throne:

  • Ashenvale
  • Barrens
  • Black Citadel
  • Cityscape
  • Dalaran
  • Dalaran Ruins
  • Dungeon
  • Felwood
  • Icecrown Glacier
  • Lordaeron Fall
  • Lordaeron Summer
  • Lordaeron Winter
  • Northrend
  • Outland
  • Sunken Ruins
  • Underground
  • Village
  • Village Fall

StarCraft I

  • Jungle
  • Installation
  • Badlands

[edit] General Terraining Hints

When creating terrain, it's always a good idea to have a reference such as an image to help you make your terrain look realistic and not plain. Additionally, general knowledge of how the environment and terrain looks in the world helps in adding more detail, depth, and beauty to your maps.

[edit] Advanced Terraining Hints

1. For more advanced terrain, use triggers for fog control (i.e. if you want to make it an underwater map, make sure to use a blueish fog, and to help with the effect, add in larger sized bubbles doodad).
2. When trying to create an indoor effect (such as a house or large mountain), the tool Miscdata.txt breaks a few limitations of the original World Editor terrain palette by allowing users to raise terrain much higher than normal, and create 90 degree cliffs (which can be smoothed for better effect depending on use) when using the Plateau tool.
Note #1: Miscdata.txt must be placed in a folder named UI located in your Warcraft III Directory.
Note #2: Miscdata can be downloaded: Here
