Void Ray
From The StarCraft 2 Wiki
The Protoss Void Ray is a heavy damage unit that is inefficient against masses of weak units. The longer it focus fire on a target, the more damage it does.

A Void Ray is a ship virtually built around a single gigantic power source: the prismatic core. This device seethes with energy drawn from two realms: the Void, which is truly understood only by the Dark Templar, and the Psionic Matrix, which underpins the technologies of the Aiur Protoss. In combination these two energies form a self-sustaining reaction of terrifying potential.
Normally the prismatic core is held in check by an arrangement of flux field projectors. When a Void Ray locks on to a target, the projector arms smoothly part like the petals of a flower. A complex array of warp lenses and phase-crystals works to focus the energies of the prismatic core into a ravening beam of destruction.
As the Prismatic Beam is held on the target, more of the focusing array becomes aligned, and up to three individual power streams combine together. Over a few seconds the beam's intensity and power grow exponentially. Few enemies can withstand the awful power of the Prismatic Beam for long; even large and heavily armored targets like buildings or Battle Cruisers are incinerated in moments.
[edit] Game Unit
The Void Ray is a Protoss air unit that is built from the Stargate and is capable of attacking both air and ground units. It's primary strength comes through a prolonged attack bonus, and is therefore better suited against large and heavily armored enemy units or structures. This makes the Void Ray inefficient against small targets such as a Marine or Zergling.
Once the Void Ray has begun firing it will follow the target if it begins to move, keeping at a close proximity since it's attack range is quite short.
The Void Ray's base damage is multiplied by 4 after 2 seconds of prolonged attack, and 8x after 4 seconds.
[edit] Upgrades
[edit] Development
Earlier designs of the Void Ray showed a much lighter color, back when it served as the Protoss capital ship. This was changed to a more darker theme when the Tempest was removed, to better align with the previously exiled Dark Templar race.
The Void Ray was renamed from the Warp Ray in early October '08.
