Zerglings are the breed of Zerg used for early game combat, scouting and cannon fodder. The StarCraft II version of the unit can also mutate into a Baneling, the suicide bombing Zergling.

A large group of Zerglings swarm a Terran base.

It is strongly believed that the Zergling breed of Zerg has derived from another core species called the Zz'gashi Dune Runner, and that the Zerg swarm encountered the breed and absorbed their DNA structure. This implies that there must have either been surviving Dune Runners, or that the Zerglings are one of the newer breeds incorporated into the swarm, as there has been made scientific comparisons by the Terrans. Regardless, it seems given that the world of Zz'gash is located fairly close to the Koprulu Sector, as the Terrans have known about the planet and its fauna.

Mutated by the Zerg to be more efficient killers, Zergling are capable of ripping a larger creature to shreds with their razor-edged forearms and sharp fangs. Their DNA structure is so simple that two Zerglings can be created from a single Larva. The larvae get the genetic information from the 'primordial ooze' of Spawning Pools.

Zerglings are the smallest Zerg land-based breed, with the exception of the Larvae, about 100 cm in height and possess webbed feet. Their long attack-claws attached on their backs makes their total height to about 150 cm. A more advanced Hive Cluster can mutate the Zergling DNA further and alter their physiology through a few different ways. The small vicious creatures are physically adaptable, able to climb near vertical surfaces and are extraordinarily fast. Usually, Zergling eye colour range from orange or red, but their sight in low light will allow the pupils to expand to the point where the eyes look black.

The general evolutional DNA "upgrades" includes tougher Carapace as well as Melee Attacks, a metabolic boost to increase reflexes and movement speed, and a mutation of their adrenal glands which makes them even more fierce warriors. As all Zerg breeds, their appearance changes over time, as the Zerg genepool changes and evolves. Since the Brood War, they have started to evolve small wings on the sides of their backs, potentially being able to fly as well as run in a not too distant future. The Zerglings have also received added gene strains that enables them to metamorph into Banelings, growing huge acid sacks on their backs and enabling them to sacrifice themselves in order to deal much damage to any foe that is caught in the explosion when they burst. Fortunately, this does not hurt other, friendly Zerg.

Zerglings make up the basic parts of the gene pool of the Zerg, and have been evolved to be the most efficient pieces of "bio-mass" in terms of resources and effective output (the Banelings are just a variation of this). They are easily killed in hand to hand combat with Protoss Zealots, and will not stand much of a fight with a Terran Marine either. Their main purpose is to either work as a scout for the swarm or be bred in large numbers rapidly and swarm their enemies, as their individual life has no value. Their twin hatching also makes them easier to control than other breeds (the only other similar breed of Zerg is the flying Scourge). In combat, Zerglings are fond of ripping enemies to shreads with their sickles and fangs, indicating a sadistic streak (although not to the extent of the Hydralisk).

The Zergling unit in StarCraft I and StarCraft II is the basic unit of the Zerg, and is used for scouting as well as attacks. They are especially good at scouting as they run fast, and they are cheap to produce. If used to attack, you usually have to bring a group of several Zerglings in order to be successful, that is, if your opponents have had time to build any defensive units at all!

The little creatures are best in group, and should be used in a way so that the opponent is surrounded, maximizing their damage potential. They are especially weak to air units, with the lack of a ranged attack, as well as units that do AoE damage, such as the Terran Siege Tank and the Protoss High Templar Psionic Storm.

[edit] StarCraft II Zergling

If used together with Roaches, Zerglings can be a very deadly attack force, acting as meat shields and making focus fire harder to pull off for the opponent. They will also work good in combination with Hydralisks, and are a very good all-around unit that can both die for a good cause or deal some damage. Mind you that they will die very fast under a volley of plasma from an upgraded Battlecruiser or the line AoE damage from a Colossus.

While Zerglings are primarily used early in a game, they can effectively be used almost anywhere at any time, as long as the opponent has not set up a proper defence against them specifically.

[edit] StarCraft I Zergling

Zerglings work well with Hydralisks in attacks, or on their own. They are quite vulnerable against Siege Tanks and the combination of Marines & Medics. They are strongest in large numbers when they can surround their opponents completely.

[edit] Development

The Zergling has gone through many phases of appearance through the years since StarCraft I was released. In its current iteration, it has even grown wings. It's unknown if they can use these for anything at all, or will in the future.
